This episode takes one more step into our series on some parables of Jesus from the Bible. A parable is a short, simple story with a deeper, secondary meaning. This is one of the more famous parables, where Jesus called His followers “salt and light.” It is found in the Bible in several places: Matthew 5:13-15, Mark 4:21-25, Luke 8:16, and Luke 11:33. The English sayings “let your light shine” and “don’t put your light under a bushel” come from this parable, which show the profound, enduring impact of the Bible on the English language and American culture. John Winthrop, a Puritan leader who was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (which later became Boston, Massachusetts), gave his famous “City on a Hill” sermon in 1630 where he implored his fellow colonists to make New England the light of the world and a good example to all.
