Reason Editor-at-Large Nick Gillespie offers a Retrospective on Trump’s
Checkered Legacy

Whatever 4D chess maneuvers the President may have been planning for the last days of his term, we might label Wednesday’s botched rally and final electoral college vote as “checkmate” for the lame duck.
Is this how the Trump presidency ends? With both a whimper and a bang?
Perhaps this is the time to leave the echo chambers of mainstream and social media to reflect on not just the last year, but the last four. Joining me this Sunday is Reason Magazine’s editor-at-large, Nick Gillespie. Nick will help guide my retrospective (or should I say post-mortem?) of the one-term legacy of Donald J. Trump.
Libertarians have always had a tortured relationship with the “Tariff Man,” whose views on trade and immigration seemed at odds with some his tax and regulatory policies.
Looking at everything from his response to COVID to his foreign policy, Nick and I will sketch the contours of what historians may someday call the Trump Doctrine.
Of course, we will also discuss the rather stunning events of this week at the Capitol. Nick will make pop culture references that I am too old to understand, and I will do my best to answer his recent question about how today’s violence compares to 1968:
Question for those old enough to remember 1968: How does the past year of politically motivated violence compare to back then?
— Nick Gillespie (@nickgillespie) January 7, 2021How will this bizarre period be remembered, and who will write the story? Tune in live from 8-9am PACIFIC as Nick and I dictate history’s first draft aloud, on the show of ideas.
