Combat sports are naturally intimate. With grappling in particular, we are in close contact with our training partners and must trust them in vulnerable positions. Sometimes because of that closeness, some lines can get blurred. Also, everyone comes to jiu jitsu with different goals and different ideas of what they are and are not willing to do. How can coaches and gym leaders push students to grow while also respecting their students bodily autonomy and any personal boundaries they have set? What about the new person joining for the first time? How do we best acclimate someone new?
