In this conversation, Sam is incredibly generous and vulnerable with what he reveals in his reinventions. One of the things I love about doing these podcasts is the conversations it sparks and the ripples the questions send out into the families of the guests and the world.
In answering the questions about reinvention, Sam, his Mum and his Dad had conversations they had never had before, and Sam heard stories about his Dad he had never heard before (His Dad is a famous Australian ceramicist, John Gilbert) he found out more about his reinvention from schoolteacher to potter and beyond. It’s easy to track where Sam gets his entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic and drive from.
This puts me in mind of the previous guest, with Gretchen where we took a deep dive into her family stories and remembered so many events and long since forgotten stories. Another story that comes up again and again for Japan-based guests is the impact the 2011 Triple earthquake, Tsunami and nuclear disaster had and Sam is no exception - it changed his, his wife’s and his business partner’s lives forever…

About Sam
Sam Gilbert was born and raised in Australia and has been living in Japan for the past 19 years. Walking into a karate dojo at the age of 8 was a pivotal moment, as it not only sparked not only an interest in martial arts, also Japanese culture and physical health and performance. These 3 aspects have guided Sam’s career, from an international level karate competitor, to physiotherapist, through to business owner, as co-founder of Club 360, Tokyo’s premier health and fitness facility.
