On December 15, 2020 the 30-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi was sentenced to death for the murders of nine people in 2017. His victims? Depressed, lonely and suicidal women sharing their thoughts on Twitter. In Japan, more people died from suicide in October 2020 than from Covid in all of 2020. And women have been impacted most.

This tragedy is part of a long overdue debate on how best to tackle Japan’s rapidly escalating suicide rate, which is one of the highest rates of any developed nation in the world. Japan is also notorious for a condition called hikikomori – characterized by people acutely withdrawing from society – and for the social stigma, which has strong roots in established cultural traditions, that continues to surround mental health issues.
