Since 2014, the Chinese government’s response to the potential threat of terrorism has seen a rapid escalation from drafting policy, to propaganda campaigns, and then to the extrajudicial detainment of over one million Turkic Muslims, mainly Uyghurs, in over 300 detainment or ‘re-education’ centers. A significant amount of evidence points to nothing less than a cultural genocide (although we use the term reservedly) which has been ongoing for at least five years, and this can no longer be ascribed to a need to quell a potential terrorist threat in North Western China. The punishment has long since outweighed the crime, or threat thereof.
