LM1178 The Jewel Box

LM, Episode 1178, 3/10/23, The Jewel Box

When I was young and lived in Kansas City, I would run after work with a group of runners.  We often ran past a hole in the wall bar about 46th and Main called the Jewel Box.  The front door had a diamond shaped window which you could peek in to see the show that was going on at the time.

One of the runners, Norman, who considered himself quite a lady’s man, stopped every time we went by to peek in that window, then would spend the next mile describing the beautiful woman dancing onstage.  This was funny to the rest of us because Norman seemed to the only person in Kansas City that didn’t know the Jewel Box put on drag shows.

The state of Tennessee this week decided to outlaw drag shows for fear it will corrupt the youth of the Volunteer State.  I’ll be honest, I have never seen a drag show, but I have seen Eddie Izzard’s comedy.  Eddie often dresses in women’s clothing and it has never made me want to put on a dress and pumps.

Florida Governor, Ron Desantis, who seems to be leading the charge on many of the tyrannical laws, just wrote a book titled The Courage To Be Free.  Seth Meyers says it is available wherever books are still legal.  The irony is conservatives are all for freedom as long as it is something they condone.  What about the freedom to learn about slavery in America?  What about the freedom to be an openly gay teacher?  What about the freedom to see a fucking drag show?

When Harry Truman would partake of liquor, he’d say he was striking a blow for liberty.  I think I will strike a blow for liberty and attend a drag show.

Take care and always remember laughter matters.
