Ep. 44 Raising Dion: A Fun Little Superhero's Story

On this episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Podcast, Graham & Jocelyn discuss Raising Dion, a Netflix original series based on a comic book by Dennis Liu starring Alisha Wainwright, Michael B. Jordan, Ja'siah Young, and Jason Ritter. Graham & Jocelyn found the series to be enjoyable and very watchable, though the storytelling style could have been better. Jocelyn explains how Dennis Liu went about finding ways to get the show picked by a major network after many rejections, so he made it into a comic book along with a short film of the same title. Graham said despite his initial reservations and fear of being disappointed, the series turned out to be incredibly captivating, so much so he ended up binge-watching it over a weekend. Graham & Jocelyn analyzed the cast and Graham said he originally thought Michael B Jordan's role in the show was a cameo, but then he was surprised to see how prominently Michael B Jordan featured on the series, even though his character is presumed dead. Jocelyn and Graham liked Alisha Wainwright, who masterfully played Dion's single mother and a former star ballerina. Graham contend that even though Ms. Wainwright is an extremely attractive actress, she remained committed to showing her acting skills and did not allow her beauty to distract from her acting. Jocelyn agrees, and the two hosts went on to a funny banter about David Caruso's cheesy puns, pose to camera, and sunglasses during the heydays of C.S.I Miami. The conversation about the cast continued and Jocelyn says she finds child actor Ja'siah Young who plays Dion, adorable, and Graham agrees. Then Jocelyn takes moment to talk about actress Sammi Haney, who plays Dion's best friend Esperanza Jimenez, an incredibly talented, funny, and absolutely adorable little girl. Jocelyn talks about Sammi's disability of osteogenesis imperfecta - brittle bone disease-  and her desire to be an advocate for people with disability.
