On June 19th, 1865, enslaved people in Texas learned slavery had been abolished...more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. That day is now called Juneteenth.
On the podcast premiere of CBS Audio's Kaleidoscope, host Allison Keyes speaks with Greg Carr, Howard University’s Chair of the Department of Afro-American studies, about the history of Juneteenth, which is now being celebrated across the country.
Allison also takes us back to her June 2020 conversation with Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch, the first Black man to hold the position.
