Social Media DMs - Just Say Hi

Erik has been advising colleagues and listeners to communicate with followers on social media through direct messages. It's something he has been doing a lot himself and he finds it very productive. The question he often gets from those he recommends this to though is, “Isn’t it awkward? What do you say?” He believes it's no more awkward than striking up a conversation with someone at a networking event. It's the same idea with the same end goal in mind.

When people ask him what they should say he simply tells them they should say what they would say if they were talking to someone in person. In other words, if you were meeting someone for the first time you would probably say hi, you would probably tell them your name, you might ask what they do, and let them know what you do. Social media direct messages aren't much different. As Erik’s good friend Zack Miller would say, “Just say hi.” It doesn’t have to be awkward.
