In your marketing department, are you asking the exact wrong question?

I recently got an interesting question from an attendee at one of the events I was speaking at. I was asked, "What companies like ours are doing this kind of marketing?"

If you always seek inspiration from others or need to see case studies to prove that something works, you're doing it wrong. Instead of being sure that something has worked in the past, why not try asking yourself, "What would our customers genuinely love?" What would make them excited about receiving your marketing materials?

If all you care about is averages, then you'll never be anything other than an average marketer.
