Previous Episode: Elonda Reads Exodus 7-8

The chapters for today continue the dramatic battle between the LORD God and Pharaoh for the release of God’s people, the children of Israel. Moses keeps going to Pharaoh with the word of the LORD to let the people go and Pharaoh keeps refusing.

Some common themes:

The plagues are so that:
it would be known that there is none like the LORD God in all the earth
His name would be declared throughout all the earth
it would be known that the earth is the LORD’s.
The LORD has put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel
God’s power is demonstrated in the wonders that He is doing in Egypt
Pharaoh’s heart is hardened time and again so that he would not let the people go.
When we look at the chapters, in chapter 9 we see three more plagues, numbers 5, 6 and 7 – death of the livestock, boils and hail. And in chapter 10 we see the plague of locusts and darkness upon the land, which are plague numbers 8 and 9.

Throughout these encounters we witness a cycle where Pharaoh asks Moses to make the plague stop and he will let the Hebrews go. But then once the plagues stop his heart is hardened and he changes his mind.

The final chapter for today’s reading, chapter 11, is God’s announcement of the final plague – the death of the firstborn.
