Exodus 7 & 8
God sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh, commanding him to let His people (the Israelites) go into the wilderness and worship Him. As they stood before Pharaoh, he requested that they perform a miracle to prove themselves. Aaron threw down his staff and it became a serpent. Pharaoh called for men skilled in magic and witchcraft as they performed the same acts. His heart became hardened and he refused to let God’s people leave the land.
Each time Pharaoh was approached, his heart became hardened and he refused to let the people go. God began to release a series of plagues upon the land to demonstrate that He is the Almighty God. The first was the plague of blood. Everywhere that there was water in Egypt—streams, canals and ponds etc—the water was turned into blood. There were other plagues that followed – plagues of frogs, gnats and flies covered the entire land, yet Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he refused to let the people go and worship God.
