SUMMARY
1st Samuel Chapter 4 5 6 8.

Chapter 4
the Israelites believed they could defeat their enemies if they took the ark of the covenant with them to battle.
LESSON
In order to receive the Lord's help, we must place our faith in Him and obey His commandments. To sincerely repent, we must forsake our sins and confess them to the Lord.

Chapter 5
begins with what the Philistines did with the ark of God, which they captured in a battle in chapter 4, against Israel. They brought the ark of God and set it in the house of their god, Dagon. In the morning, the God of Israel knocked their god, Dagon, down on this face.
LESSON
shows us how, even in the bleakest moments, God is unstoppable in his pursuit of his children. When we start 1 Samuel 5, the ark of the covenant has been captured by Israel's mortal enemies, the Philistines. And that might be even worse that it sounds.

Chapter 6
explains the counsel they sought, the act they did, and how remarkable it was that the Ark was taken by young calves back into Israel.
LESSON
explains the counsel they sought, the act they did, and how remarkable it was that the Ark was taken by young calves back into Israel. The borderland of Israel who received the Ark then treaded foolishly and death followed as they looked inside it.

Chapter 7
The Philistines plan to attack the Israelites at Mizpah and everyone becomes afraid. They plead to Samuel for help, so he offers a lamb to God. The Lord shouts with a voice like thunder and the Philistines became confused. The Israelites take advantage of their befuddlement and slay the Philistines.
LESSON
Samuel prayed diligently before God for Israel's sake, and as the Philistines approached, God began a thunderous storm. The storm was so bad that it totally discomfited the Philistines and they were smitten before Israel. Samuel called the place Ebenezer, which meant the LORD has helped us.

Chapter 8
Samuel's sons take bribes and pervert judgment The Israelites seek for a king to rule over them—Samuel rehearses the nature and evils of kingly rule The Lord consents to give them a king.
LESSON
Samuel is unhappy that Israel wants a king, so he prays to God for guidance. God assures Samuel that Israel is rejecting Him, not Samuel. He explains that this is how the Israelites have always behaved. God will grant Israel a human king, but first they must be warned of the consequences that will bring.
