The federal government is terminating its contract with the Yuba County Jail for detaining immigrants. A pilot program in Sacramento County is helping low-income homeowners with the “green energy” transition. Crocker Art Museum provides a preview of their upcoming exhibit featuring Lee Alexander McQueen and Ann Ray.

ICE ends contract with Yuba County Jail

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (also known as ICE) has ended a contract to hold immigrant detainees with Yuba County Jail / about an hour north of Sacramento. The termination ends a contract that dates back nearly 30 years ago to 1994. The news is hailed by elected officials and immigration rights advocates as long overdue / because of the facility’s record of failing to meet ICE inspection standards. Tyche Hendricks, Senior Editor for Immigration at KQED, joined us to share her reporting on the termination of the contract.

SMUD energy transition

California has set lofty goals and is continuing to make strides in reducing its carbon footprint and minimize the impact of climate change. Part of that effort includes encouraging residents to make this transition in their everyday lives, from buying electric cars, swapping out stoves, and installing solar panels. But for many the environmental arguments for “going green” may not be convincing enough to make the switch, especially when many green technologies are financially out of reach. But a new pilot program in Sacramento County aims to help low-income homeowners who live in older, gas-reliant houses make the transition. CapRadio Environment Reporter Manola Secaira joined Insight us now to tell us more about this program and share what she learned speaking to Sacramento residents who are taking part in this energy transition.
