Dr. Ramon Goings, assistant professor in the Language, Literacy, and Culture interdisciplinary doctoral program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, joins this episode of Illuminate Higher Education to discuss his research and publications on the academic and social experiences of high-achieving Black men, from pre-K through Ph.D.

Ramon begins by discussing the unique challenges doctoral students face in completing the dissertation process. He shares how his own experiences led him to develop a coaching program to support students working on their doctorates. His program offers writing guidance, accountability strategies, and structure.

Ramon and Kiran also talk about what it means to be a “gifted” student and how traditional methods of identifying “giftedness” are subjective and can result in racial disparities that persist in higher education. Ramon touches on the important role of historically black colleges and universities in cultivating equity-oriented mindsets in students and professionals.
