やさしい英語会話 (234) Wanting American Food

皆さんはアメリカ料理というと何を連想されますか？ハンバーガー、ホットドッグ、クラムチャウダーなどのポピュラーなものや、タコスやピザのように外国からアメリカに入ってきたもの、あるいはジャンバラヤなどの地方料理など、様々な料理がありますね。



今回の会話は、ふるさとの料理を懐かしむ二人のアメリカ人留学生による会話です。どんな料理の名前が登場するでしょうか。この会話では「しゃきっとしたレタス」や「まぶす」「ひたす」「敷き詰める」など、料理や食べ物にまつわる表現がたくさん出てきますので、皆さんの好きな料理を英語で表現する時などに、ぜひ使ってみてくださいね。

Wanting American Food



Setting: Two American friends at a convenience store.



W: Hey, what is all this stuff? Dried squid… fish and almonds… wasabi kit-kats?! Whatever happened to chips and soda?



M: Um, we're not in America anymore, Laura. Here in Japan they have different stuff. I mean, imagine Japanese people back at home; would they eat double bacon cheeseburgers?



W: Um… yeah? Double bacon cheeseburgers are awesome!



M: Actually, yeah, they probably would… I just thought since our food is so greasy, and, like, big, it wouldn't be so appealing to them.



W: Really, don't be stereotypical. But who doesn't love a good burger and fries with a beer on the side?



M: Now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind standing over a hot grill listening to sizzling burger patties cook. That's America.



W: Or a nice Philadelphia hoagie. Steak n' Cheese is definitely a favorite: a 12-inch French baguette slapped with Dijon mustard, alfalfa on a bed of juicy tomatoes sprinkled with salt with a blanket of crunchy lettuce, and it's all topped off with perfectly cooked grade-A beef drenched in melted Swiss cheese. Hey, I'm starving.



M: I hate you so much for reminding me that those exist, and also reminding me that we're about 10,000 kilometers away from that kind of food.



W: Don't worry. We have squid and yoghurt-Pepsi to take away the pain!



M: Ha-ha...very funny...



W: Come on, it's not so bad. Imagine all the people back at home that wish they could be where we are right now! Japan is one of the most interesting places on earth. You could show a little gratitude…



M: Yeah, I'm happy I'm here! Really, I am thankful. It's just that sometimes I do miss some things from home. So, are you getting the dried squid then?



W: Um… I think I'll look for some chips and soda!
