Today marks the birthday of Peadar Kearney who was stage manager for the Abbey Theatre and more significantly, the man who penned The Soldiers Song.
Initially written in English, the song has a surprising pedigree, and was penned nine years before 1916 Rising.
To that generation, it was an English-language “rousing chorus song" so, how did we end up with Amhrán na bhFiann? Will it survive? And did Peadar see the fruits of his labour?
