The Freedom of the City of Dublin is an honour bestowed on names as diverse as Jack Charlton, Maureen Potter, and John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

In June 1973, it was bestowed on the duo of Hilton Edwards and Michaél Mac Liammóir - in its own way, that was an acceptance of their duality.

In an Ireland before decriminalisation of homosexuality, Edwards and Mac Liammoir were undoubtedly Ireland’s most recognised ‘gay couple’, even if that itself went unsaid.
