Hi Everybody - A Bad Medicine Podcast

86 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 1 year ago - ★★★★★ - 33 ratings

Doctors talk about what Hollywood gets right and wrong about medicine and how the body works. Each week we discuss how a film or episode of television depicts illnesses, injuries, and the lives of medical professionals.

As we wrap up each episode, the film or show being discussed is graded for its medical accuracy in comparison to 2010’s The Human Centipede, which marketed itself as “100% medically accurate.” Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, for example, is considered “140% medically accurate” when compared to The Human Centipede. Luc Besson’s Lucy, meanwhile, was awarded a 10%. Midsommar earned our highest rank yet, at 400% - which means it's roughly four times more medically accurate than The Human Centipede.

32. Seinfeld: The Suicide - "Tums Induced Coma?"

March 03, 2020 10:00 - 31 minutes - 22.1 MB

Jackson, Johnny, and Dr. Greg Winter discuss Seinfeld's "The Suicide," where Jerry dates a coma patient's girlfriend, Elaine fasts for three days, and we learn Kramer's lost his vacuum. The most important question of the episode is, of course, "is this more accurate than The Human Centipede?" A close second this week: "would YOU trust a pregnant and smoking psychic? Our intro this week comes from Lore School: the world's best, most radical, and possibly only "Monster High" podcast. :Lor...

31. Lost: All Cowboys Have Daddy Issues - "Communal stethoscopes kind of weird me out"

February 18, 2020 09:00 - 39 minutes - 27.3 MB

"Lost's" Jack Shephard is a neurosurgeon - so why's he fixing a severed hepatic artery? This week Johnny and Dr. Jackson discuss an episode of Lost which really sheds light into Jack's daddy issues, as well as seeing an incredibly successful cardiac thump. Also, Boone's in this one. Remember Boone?

30. Lucy - "My favorite class in med school was brain!"

February 13, 2020 09:00 - 1 hour - 47.7 MB

According to "Lucy," we only use ten percent of our brain. Which is true, in the same way that we only use 33% of a stoplight. This week we're discussing a 2014 Scarlett Johanssen film that is, by our estimation, 10% as medically accurate as "The Human Centipede." FYI, this movie got us pretty riled up, and we do end up using some adult language.

29. Scrubs: My Life in Four Cameras - "Wuhan coronavirus ain't nothin' to fu.."

February 04, 2020 09:00 - 32 minutes - 22.5 MB

Wuhan coranavirus is in the news, and when there's media hysteria, hospitals get overrun. That makes this a good time to FINALLY cover "Scrubs,"where an E. Coli outbreak sends hypochondriacs stampeding into Sacred Heart.

28. Hitch - "ACK!!!! ACCCCK!!!!"

January 28, 2020 10:00 - 22 minutes - 15.8 MB

"I looked just like Hitch!" That's what allergist Dr. Nisha Shah hears from some new patients - or at least new patients in their 30s - when they describe their first serious allergic reaction. She and frequent guest Dr. Courtney Nicholas join us to discuss a surprisingly accurate scene from 2005's "Hitch."

27. House MD: Safe - "They're probably centrifuging the sperm"

January 21, 2020 10:00 - 55 minutes - 38.6 MB

In this episode, Johnny learns it's possible to have a semen allergy. Dr. Jackson Vane and Johnny Kolasinski are joined by Dr. Greg Winter and first-time guest Dr. Nisha Shah to discuss S02E16 of House, MD, "Safe." As a note, we discuss adult reproductive functions in this episode, so it might not be suitable for children or workplace listening. Have a question? Give us a call at 530-DOCTORB or find us on social media @hieverybodymd!

26. Parks and Rec: Flu Season - "The Man Flu. Hebola. Himfluenza."

January 14, 2020 10:00 - 34 minutes - 23.9 MB

Since the real-world flu season is in full swing, we thought it would be appropriate to talk about the influenza epidemic that hit Pawnee, Indiana in the Parks and Rec episode "Flu Season." How easy would it really be for Leslie Knope to steal other patients' meds and escape the hospital?

25. Knives Out - "Blood Isn't That Flammable"

January 07, 2020 19:03 - 41 minutes - 28.4 MB

Johnny and Dr. Jackson discuss Knives Out, which is still in theaters. On top of being a great movie, it's incredibly medically accurate! There's spoilers for every twist in the movie, so be forewarned. Also, we couldn't rewatch the important scenes, so Johnny is horrible at remembering the dead guy's name. Harlan Wayans? Harcourt Fenton? Steve Harvey? Want to record an intro for the show? Check out hieverybodymd.com or give us a call at 530-DOCTORB! Join the discussion in /r/screenw...

23. House MD: Deception - "Yeah, she'd be dead already."

December 25, 2019 01:36 - 40 minutes - 28.3 MB

Happy holidays! This week we're discussing "Deception," an episode of House MD that is at LEAST as medically accurate as Human Centipede. There's some serious discussion in this episode, like why doctors shy away from using the term "Munchausen Syndrome" in your charts.

22. South Park: Turd Burglars - "Please don't sell your poop on the internet."

December 17, 2019 10:00 - 23 minutes - 16.5 MB

How medically accurate could South Park's take on fecal transplants be? Actually, Turd Burglars is one of the most accurate pieces we've covered! It turns out D.I.Y. poop transplants are pretty bad for you. Plus, Jackson and Johnny give their turkey basting tips! Questions or suggestions? Visit hieverybodymd.com or give us a call at 530-DOCTORB! Discuss this episode in /r/screenwriting at https://www.reddit.com/r/Screenwriting/comments/echwco/discussion_south_parks_turd_burglars_was_120/.

December 03, 2019 20:12 - 53 minutes - 36.8 MB

So it's come to this - we're covering a medical show. Johnny and Dr. Jackson Vane sat down to watch the pilot episode of "The Resident," and... it's bad, folks. It's very, very bad. Not only is it inaccurate, it's incredibly cynical. That's dangerous. Have feedback? Contact us through our website, hieverybodymd.com, or give us a call at 530-DOCTORB! The "B" is for "Best fans in America!"

20. The Matrix - "Neo is Basically Veal"

Hosts Johnny Kolasinski and Dr. Jackson Vane are joined by Dr. Greg Winter and Dr. Navpaul Singh to discuss the film that gave us both bullet time and Hugo Weaving. Have a question for Jackson and Johnny? Want to tell us we're wrong? Give us a call at 530-DOCTORB or hit us up on social media @HiEverybodyMD!

November 19, 2019 07:48 - 44 minutes - 30.9 MB

In Star Trek: The Next Generation S06E05, "Schisms," Commander Riker and the Enterprise crew suffer from sleep deprivation. This is something doctors have first-hand experience with. 18. The Blacklist: Louis T. Steinhil Conclusion - "Give me a knife"

November 12, 2019 19:24 - 32 minutes - 22.4 MB

This week we're talking about an episode of TV that's gotten a lot of flack from the medical community. On S07E02 of The Blacklist, there's a chest tube insertion that's depicted rather poorly. Jackson and Johnny thought that'd be the only thing we'd have to talk about from this episode. We were very, very wrong. Watch the scene in question at https://www.facebook.com/charlene.parkclayton/videos/10218820841099771/

In the film, an apocalyptic super-virus is eliminated when The Rock helps Jason Statham's sister undergo dialysis using an iPad. We loved this movie. November 04, 2019 16:55 - 5 minutes - 3.96 MB

This week's episode of American Horror Story 1984 answered some of our questions from last week, so Jackson and Johnny recorded a quick follow-up.

15. American Horror Story 1984: "Episode 100" - "The execution of the execution was flawed"

October 29, 2019 09:00 - 23 minutes - 16.3 MB

It's our most topical show yet! We're discussing American Horror Story: 1984's "Episode 100," which first aired October 23, 2019. How medically accurate is the execution? Are the inaccuracies just a red herring? Was there, for once, too MUCH blood?  Our intro this week came from Tom Feeney of The Deep Dive Podcast. You can send us an intro too! Visit hieverybody.libsyn.com for details.

This week, we're talking about the medical accuracy of 2005's Saw II with guests Dr. Greg Winter and Dr. Courtney Nicholas. How deadly are the traps, really? Could Jigsaw REALLY have taken a beating from Donnie Wahlberg? Is building torture rooms recommended therapy for a terminal cancer diagnosis?

"Flatliners" gets almost everything wrong about doctors

October 16, 2019 19:15

A few weeks ago on Reddit, I shared our episode discussing "The Injury" episode of The Office, which manages to gets everything right, from the actual symptoms of a concussion to the mistakes people make when self-treating injuries. This week we talked about the 1990 horror film "Flatliners," which gets almost everything wrong. Last week we talked about "The Human Centipede," which was arguably more medically accurate. I thought this was an episode worth sharing with r/screenwriting becaus...

13. Flatliners: "You can't opt-in to getting murdered"

October 15, 2019 18:15 - 43 minutes - 29.9 MB

What's the most medically accurate way to temporarily murder your friends? This week we're discussing 1990's Flatliners, starring Keifer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and Billy Baldwin. Somehow, this film manages to be LESS medically accurate than Human Centipede!

12. Human Centipede: "My whole life is poop."

October 08, 2019 07:30 - 1 hour - 44.1 MB

Human Centipede bills itself as 100% accurate, but is it really? Can a movie about sewing people together, face-to-butt, get everything right? We've put together a crack team of physicians - Dr. Jackson and guests Dr. Greg Winter and Dr. Courtney Nicholas - to investigate as part of our #Hortober series.

October 01, 2019 09:00 - 32 minutes - 22.9 MB

Jackson and Johnny discuss the medical moments in the 2004 stoner classic Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. In reality, it's very unlikely that your surgeon's brother will perform your operation, even if he is interviewing at prestigious med schools. Towards the end, Johnny learns all about intraosseous infusion, which is like getting an IV except it involves drilling into your bones.

The Office's "The Injury" gets almost all the medical components right

September 30, 2019 19:00

Normally, we look at bad depictions of medicine in TV and film, and brainstorm ways to make scenes more medically accurate while keeping the stakes high. I wanted to share our latest episode, discussing The Office S02E12 "The Injury," because it's a great example of a show that did their research and gets most of the medical bits right. There are two medical incidents that drive this episode. The more serious one is Dwight's concussion. Over the course of the episode, his symptoms progress...

10. The Office: The Injury - "Don't photobomb your kid's X-ray!"

September 24, 2019 06:00 - 35 minutes - 24.4 MB

People put all sorts of things on burns. Butter... mayonnaise... mustard.  This week we discuss the medical accuracy of  "The Injury," S02E12 of The Office - and for once, we're talking mostly about what a show gets right! This episode does an excellent job depicting the progression of Dwight's concussion, and while Michael does everything wrong in treating his burnt foot, the things he gets wrong are all mistakes Jackson and other doctors see patients making on a regular basis.  Link to...

9. Bond: Die Another Day - "He's Getting A DNA-ectomy"

September 17, 2019 07:34 - 35 minutes - 24.6 MB

"First, we're gonna wipe out your bone marrow and clean out your DNA." Johnny, Dr. Jackson, and guest Dr. Greg Winter discuss the glaring medical inaccuracies of the James Bond film Die Another Day. The biggest issues are related to "DNA replacement therapy, but this movie has everything! Shock paddles! Coma recovery fight scenes! Traumatic brain injury!  How is it that this film is less medically accurate than Crank?

8. Seinfeld: The Junior Mint - "Well, You Can't Eat Around a Surgical Mask"

September 10, 2019 11:00 - 33 minutes - 23.4 MB

Johnny, Dr. Jackson, and guest Dr. Greg Winter discuss the medical accuracy of the Junior Mint episode of Seinfeld and why modern safeguards would prevent it from taking place today. Plus, Greg and Jackson talk about their experiences in the operating room -- which aren't as glamorous as you'd think -- and one unexpected way "E.R." shaped today's doctors. We'd like to apologize to any anesthesiologists in the audience, especially those listening at work. Watch the Seinfeld episode on Ama...

7. Star Trek Voyager: Phage - "ECMO won't be the hot cleanse of the season."

September 03, 2019 11:46 - 35 minutes - 24.7 MB

"His lungs have been removed." Johnny and Jackson discuss Star Trek: Voyager S01E05: "Phage," wherein Neelix's lungs are removed and he needs holographic replacements. Jackson learns that the Doctor is the hardest working hologram in medicine! Johnny gets grossed out for the first time in the history of this show! Once again, there's not enough blood!

August 27, 2019 19:46 - 42 minutes - 38.8 MB

This week Dr. Greg Winter joins us to talk about the medicine behind Jason Statham's 2006 action classic "Crank." Is it medically accurate? No. Is it awesome? Absolutely. Surprisingly, it also includes one of the most professional doctoring scenes we've seen so far! Could Padme really have died of a broken heart? Surprisingly, yes!

August 20, 2019 19:00

This week, we looked at the death of Padme and the battle of Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. It turns out that it is possible to die of a broken heart, but it probably wouldn't look like what we saw on screen. There's a condition called takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or "octopus trap heart," which can occur in otherwise healthy people as a reaction to high stress situations like public speaking, getting fired, or losing your husband to the Sith. Stress hormones cause one part of your heart to ...
