Welcome to our new segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  (#3MinThursday) where I highlight a piece of wisdom I’ve come across from my own readings over the past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life.

Today's episode provides three easy ways to practice presence:

Ask yourself what is going on inside me right know? Am I feeling nervous or uneasy or tight? Try to get in touch with your emotions because emotions are merely reflections of the mind. And usually our minds are busy manufacturing problems. So when you can tap into your emotions, you are automatically practicing presence and you give your mind a chance to pause, rest and reset.Ask yourself, what thoughts am I producing in my head right now? I do this often when I’m driving. I observe where my mind is going (which is usually thinking about something I have to do or judging a situation) and I bring it back to the now – I notice the feeling in hands from the steering wheel, I pay attention to the license plate ahead of me and the scenery outside the window. By being the observer of your thoughts you can steer them back to the present.Use your five senses to bring you back to the here and now. I just talked about feeling the steering wheel with my hands as I’m driving. That’s one example. I also like to immerse myself in the sounds around me – the rustling of the leaves or people talking. Often we move through life completely out of touch with the sounds around us. Try to feel the air moving through your nostrils or paying extra special attention to how each sip of your coffee tastes. By activating your senses you immerse yourself in the present, the only place in which you can live your best, most calm, most fulfilling life.
