Charlotte Cooper was a tennis player and the first woman to receive a gold medal on a summer Olympic games. In 1900 Olympic games she won not one, but two golden medals in two different tennis categories. Despite being deaf since the age of 26 she had a long and successful career, competitively playing tennis till her fifties. Her record of consecutive semi-finals in Wimbledon lasted long and was only surpassed by another great tennis woman named Martina Navratilova.
