II Chronicles 10 recounts the story of Rehoboam, Solomon's son, and his ascension to the throne of Israel. The chapter describes how the people of Israel, led by Jeroboam, approached Rehoboam asking for lighter burdens than those imposed by his father Solomon. Rehoboam sought advice from both the elders, who recommended he grant the people's request, and his younger peers, who advised him to increase their burdens. Choosing the latter counsel, Rehoboam harshly responded to the people's plea, leading to a rebellion. As a result, the kingdom split, with ten tribes forming the northern kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam's rule, and only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remaining loyal to Rehoboam in the southern kingdom of Judah. This chapter marks the beginning of the divided monarchy in Israel's history.
