Your Heard Tell Show for Thursday, August 31st is turning down the noise of the news cycle and getting to the information we need to discern our times by talking about how fandom is ruining politics and skewing folks' perspective on what is really going on. Economist Alexander Salter returns to talk about economics and his new book, The Political Economy of Distributism, how we have failed to properly understand and teach basic concepts like property, liberty, common good, and other building blocks to good economic understanding, and better ways to discuss them. Dr. Salter also talks about ethics in economics, how that influences politics and policy, and why everyone from news media to social media to office holders can't seem to find a way to discuss the current complicated economic situation. Then, with hurricane season upon us, host Andrew reups his classic rant and newly updated for the Heard Tell SubStack his piece about the ridiculous habit of news media to put reporters and weather people in danger just for the action shots during storms in Information: But Dumber, Louder, and Wetter. Plus, Jill Jacobson of Young Voices joins Heard Tell to talk about the latest versions of the very old debate on books in school, or more to the point what is/isn't obscene and who gets to decide the difference. Jill talks about the Texas SAFER Act, what it does and doesn't do, how even well-intentioned legislation can be derailed when poorly written, the cycle of legislate/litigate, the big business of American education, and the conflict between parents, students, teachers, school systems, and now even school vendors like the book suppliers. We end on a good note with the amazing story of a failed college kicker who finally made the team, after a 16-year detour through the Marine Corps, grad school, and not taking no for an answer.

All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell.
