In this three-part series, we’ll be examining the opioid epidemic in America, which is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands every year and has been declared a nationwide public health emergency by the U.S. government.

In this segment, we’re talking to NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Michael Nelson MD, a physician who is on the front lines of this epidemic. Dr. Nelson is helping save the lives of overdose victims who come into the emergency department, and working with patients who need help overcoming their addiction. Dr. Nelson also talks about the history of substance abuse in society and the frightening trends he sees today.

Michael Nelson, MD is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Medical Toxicology.  He practices medicine at NorthShore University HealthSystem.
