Can niceness be an enemy of holiness?

There’s a lot of talk about the cost of “cancel culture,” but there is less talk about the price we pay by putting niceness ahead of holiness in approaching our communities and its dynamics. Why is that and how do we change that?

You’re listening to Happy & Holy, a podcast about discipleship and community and how we meet each other right where we are to be the people of God on planet earth. And when we do, we have the potential to become the happy and holy disciples we are meant to be.

I’m your host Kate Boyd, and today, I am joined by Sharon Hodde Miller and we’re talking all about the price of nice in Christian circles. Sharon Hodde Miller leads Bright City Church in Durham, NC with her husband, Ike. She is the author of 2 books: Free of Me and Nice. She has a PhD on women and calling, and she is the mother of 3 young kids.

As a girl raised in the south who went to charm school, I needed to hear that nice is not always the best option. If you need that reminder sometimes too, then you’re gonna enjoy this conversation.

We’re called to more than “nice,” we’re called to be holy. And sometimes that means we have to embrace friction in our relationships to create a smoother path for us all as we move toward heaven. I’m so glad Sharon has helped to point us that direction.
