I recently spoke with Liberty Gaither, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Manic Metallic, about her passion for fashion as an art and as a vehicle for sustainability.
We spoke about fashion as a disposable good and the rise of fast fashion. Liberty emphasized the short lifespan of trends as a driver of waste in the fashion industry and pointed to the importance of considering fashion's impact on the environment and people.
Liberty said, "Fast fashion is a mindset... we'll look at a t-shirt for $3 dollars and say, 'Oh, this is a great deal, I'll buy seven of them.' But then, how is a t-shirt three dollars?" She explained that a store won't sell a piece of clothing if they're not profiting from it-- so if a t-shirt is that inexpensive, the people who make the clothes probably are not being fairly reimbursed for their labor.
