⊕ Public Outcry Continues to Grow Over George Floyd's Death
Left: George Floyd, Middle, Minneapolis on fire during protests. Photo Credit...Kerem Yucel/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images. Right, Derek Chauvin pins Floyd down by the neck with his knee.
On Monday in Minneapolis, 46-year-old George Floyd died after he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by police officer Derek Chavin. The event was captured on video and has since sparked national outrage because Chavin, a white man, used his knee to pin Floyd, an African-American man, down by the neck — a method of restraint that is known to be inherently dangerous.
The video shows Floyd repeating "I can't breathe," but Chavin did not relent. He kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for a total of eight minutes and 46 seconds. After Floyd became unresponsive, he was taken away by ambulance and ultimately died.
The footage that was taken by bystanders went viral on social media, and by the next day, Minneapolis police chief Medaria Arradondo had fired all four men involved in the incident, calling for an FBI investigation. That night, protests began in Minneapolis, beginning a public outcry of rage against racism and abuse of power.
By Wednesday, additional protests were underway in several cities across the US including Los Angelos and Memphis. On Thursday, vandalism and fires led Minneapolis officials to request help, so the National Guard was activated in the state. Later that night, the Third Precinct police station was cleared out just after 10 p.m. before rioters seized control, ultimately burning the station and other nearby buildings.
As of today, Chavin has been taken into custody and faces third-degree murder and manslaughter charges. It is unknown at this time if the other three officers will also face charges. Public outrage is growing as reports of demonstrations are cropping up in more cities, including New York, Dallas, and Washington DC.

Duty Double TACO Plus, Duty Triple Pistol TACO

Gun News. Love TACOS? Well, High Speed Gear added a couple of new ones this week to the Duty line: a double and a triple. These pouches are different than what you may be used to with the original TACOS, because the bungee is hidden.

The adjustable double pistol mag pouch fits larger-capacity pistol magazines. The shorter setting fits mags like the 21-round P320 x-Five and the longer setting fits mags like the extended 10-round 1911 mags. The triple pouch holds most pistol-caliber magazines, small flashlights, pocket knives, multitools, and more. From High Speed Gear: These products were designed to meet popular demand from law enforcement seeking to carry additional magazines or fit high capacity pistol mags. While the Triple can hold three pistol mags as its name implies, the Plus is designed to fit either 21-round 9mm magazines, such as for the P320 X-Five, or 10-round 1911 mags. Both products are available now. “We’re very excited about these two products,” said Bill Babboni, HSGI vice president of sales and operations. “We’ve received a lot of requests for these two in particular and we’re always looking for ways to expand our catalog to better serve our men and women in blue.” Read more at High Speed Gear: https://www.highspeedgear.com/

⊕Roscoe Manufacturing
Purebred M-Lok Handguard Line Now Includes 7”, 10.75”, and 13” Lengths

“With the addition of these new handguards we have been able to provide customers with the products that they have been requesting from us for some time. This is our true test as a manufacturer, to be able to intake consumer need and turn that into products that will truly benefit our customers.” – Gabriel Cabrera (Marketing/ Sales Director).

The new Purebred 13” Mlok handguard is optimal for 13.7” to 16” barrels but also works with shorter barrels if an enclosed muzzle device is used to extend the length.

From Roscoe Manufacturing: In the never-ending pursuit to expand their list of quality products offered, Rosco has brought their new line of Purebred accessories to the market jointly designed for the barrel maker by industry-leading artisans, American Defense Mfg. The new Rosco designed Purebred M-Lok rails feature precision machining from 6061 aluminum, Type 3 hard-coat anodizing, and tightened tolerances to enhance the performance/ fitment of the Bloodline & Purebred barrels. Current versions of the rails offered were the 9”, 13.5”, & 15” M-Lok handguards. With the addition of the new Purebred M-Lok handguards in 7”, 10.75”, & 13” every barrel from 5.5” and up will be covered. The 13” Purebred is a Rosco exclusive and was designed specifically for carbines employing 13.7” barrels. It allows the end-user to use muzzle devices that are quick-detach platforms for suppressors. Most commercially available 13” + rails will cover the muzzle device blocking access to suppressors. They could also cause a catastrophic failure if carbine builders shoot a rifle with a muzzle device that is covered (even partially) by a rail. The new Rosco 13” Purebred handguard is perfect for this combo and can be used for any other configuration longer than 13.7” as well. ⊕More Gun News from Canada

Two weeks ago we reported on the assault-style firearm ban in Canada. We know that it continues to be a tough one to swallow for our neighbors up north. But this week, the issue of guns in Canada has come across the feed two more times – in what seems like a head-scratching contradiction.

New PDW’s for Canadian Snipers

Gun News. We just learned that the Canadian Department of National Defense is spending $8.5 million to replace the C8 with the 7.62 NATO C20 rifle to serve as the PDW for the nation’s sniper teams. Apparently, the Canadian government awarded a $2 million contract to Colt Canada in late February to get the production line going, with an initial delivery of ten C20 rifles. Several weeks later in mid-April, another $6.5 million contract was awarded to the same company to produce 262 additional C20’s, associated equipment, and spare parts.

Fundamentally, the C20 is an M4-style carbine, with an overall length of 38-inches and weighing 9.1-pounds. (Photo: Colt Canada)

The news of these contracts wasn’t widely announced, as compared to the January announcement by defence minister Harjit Sajjan that the Canadian government was purchasing 3,600 machine guns from Colt. According to reports, defense officials privately say the contract “wasn’t publicized because there was concern about the political optics of such an announcement coming just before the Liberal government banned assault rifles, including those made by Colt Canada, from being owned by private citizens.”

Stormtrooper Taken Down

Gun News. Last Sunday, a Coco Vanilla Galactic Cantina restaurant employee in Lethbridge, Alberta was detained after 911 callers reported seeing someone wearing a Stormtrooper costume and carrying a gun. As it turns out, the restaurant is a “Star Wars” themed restaurant that has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the employee was wearing the costume in an effort to drum up business.

A restaurant employee wearing a “Star Wars” costume and carrying a plastic blaster was detained in Canada last Sunday after 911 callers reported seeing someone in a Stormtrooper costume carrying a gun. Image source: NBC News, Brad Whalen.

According to reports, multiple officers, some with guns drawn, shouted at the employee to get down on the ground. But according to the Lethbridge Police Services statement, the woman did not initially comply with the officers’ instructions to get on the ground. Brad Whalen, owner of the Cantina, said that it’s hard to move in the costume. “That’s what she was trying to yell,” he said. “You can’t kneel. You can’t sit when you wear it.”

Ultimately the blaster was confirmed to be fake and the woman was not arrested. She did suffer a minor injury that didn’t require medical attention and the police chief ordered an investigation of the incident.

This a compact but hard-core tool. We’ve all had “Oh Crap’ moments that end a day at the range. Many of us own AR15’s because of how much fun they are to shoot, or because we want to be armed and ready for bad situations that come our way un-invited. Regardless of why someone owns an AR15, they want it to function every time they need to shoot. Gun Tool CORE is for that gun owner.” Take a look at the features. ⊕75th anniversary of Victory in Europe
Ceremony Held at the National World War II Memorial in Washington

75 years ago today, on May 8th, 1945, the Allies formally accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender. Although fighting in the Pacific continued until the 2nd of September, this day is marked as Victory in Europe Day or VE Day. A ceremony was held at the National WWII Memorial in Washington today to commemorate the anniversary. In an official statement, President Trump said, “Seventy-five years ago today, the last remnants of the Nazi regime unconditionally surrendered to the Allied Powers, marking the end of World War II in Europe. Today, we celebrate the forces of freedom who defeated tyranny and emerged victorious in that monumental struggle. We pay tribute to those who served for their service and pause to remember those who gave their last full measure in defense of the flames of liberty.”

President and First Lady Trump placed a wreath, toured the National WWII Memorial, and met with veterans who were in attendance of the ceremony. Image source: defense.gov.

The president said that fewer than 400,000 of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II are still alive. “Their generation — the Greatest Generation — will never be forgotten,” he said. “We are forever grateful for their immeasurable contributions to the success and prosperity of our nation.” The US Department of State put this video together, in commemoration. https://youtu.be/JTuspSU_dhM

⊕Famous WWII Photographer Beats COVID-19 at 97
Tony Vacarro Credits “Blind Luck,” Red Wine, and Determination

Tony Vacarro, famous World War II photographer, just proved once again that he is a survivor. He was orphaned by the age of 5, survived the Battle of Normandy, and now, at the grand age of 97, he has won the battle against COVID -19. According to the family, he was hospitalized with this most recent battle for two days with mild symptoms, followed by a week of recovery at home

Then he surprised everyone by getting up and shaving.

“That was it,” daughter-in-law Maria said. “He’s walking around like nothing happened.”

Vaccaro, 97, was thrown into WWII with the 83rd Infantry division which fought, like Charles Shay, in Normandy, and then came to Schmetz’s doorstep for the Battle of the Bulge. On top of his military gear, he also carried a camera, and became a fashion and celebrity photographer after the war. [AP]

Gun News. Remington made gun news this week by announcing its plans to debut this new bolt action rifle chambered for 50 BMG in the fall of 2020. The R2Mi is reportedly based on the Bushmaster BA50, which is no longer in production, so apparently Remington saw a need to keep a .50 cal in production. ⊕Canada Bans 1500 Models of Assault-Style Firearms

Our northern neighbors in the firearms community are shaking their heads in dismay today after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a new ban on some 1,500 makes and models of military-grade “assault-style” weapons. Effective immediately, licensed gun owners will no longer be allowed to sell, transport, import or use these sorts of weapons in Canada. Although a Canadian ban of this nature has been in the works for quite some time, the ban serves as a response to the mass shooting that happened in Nova Scotia two weeks ago, killing 22 people. Of note, the gunman did not have a firearms license — a requirement for legal gun ownership in Canada.

105,000 firearms previously classified in Canada as “restricted” are now “prohibited.” Here is the list of banned Firearms. While there is a two-year amnesty period, use of these firearms is banned starting today. Trudeau indicated that the amnesty period will give time to people who already own these firearms to comply with the ban. He also said that legislation in the coming months will be passed to provide “fair compensation” to people who own these firearms. Reportedly, these are the principle firearms that fall under the new prohibition:

M16, AR-10, AR-15 rifles and M4 carbine
Ruger Mini-14 rifle
US Rifle M14
Vz58 rifle and CZ858 rifle
Robinson Armament XCR rifle
CZ Scorpion EVO 3 carbine and pistol
Beretta Cx4 Storm carbine
SIG Sauer SIG MCX and SIG Sauer SIG MPX carbines and pistols
Swiss Arms Classic Green and Four Seasons series rifles

Rod Giltaca, CEO of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights, said the firearms community is “devastated” by Friday’s development. “The only people that will lose their guns in this action are licensed gun owners. No criminals will register or turn in a single rifle,” he said in a statement. “This move is viewed as entirely political.”
