Joanne Williams talks about guilt, her experiences working in long term care homes, statistics on the current suicide rate with caregivers, Covid-19 and the economy.
In this episode of the podcast, we’re talking about how guilt can lead to depression and the distinction between grief and depression. Joanne shares her experiences working in long term care homes helping people transition and the guilt family members face around death. We touch on the differences of elderly care in other parts of the world and the alarming suicide rate within the caregiving communities in America because they are understaffed, stressed and overworked.
“When I saw this statistic and I think it was from an Alzheimer's organization, that 80 percent, I believe it was of the caregivers succumb to an illness before the person they were caring for died. So, there is a complete strain on that caregiver.
And the other statistic that really concerns me is that now, along with 18 to 24 year old’s, but unpaid caregivers now the suicide rate has doubled. I think people are just getting so overwhelmed.” Joanne Williams
