"Ad Astra," "Rambo: Last Blood," "Ratatouille"

September 23, 2019 02:23 - 1 hour

Brad Pitt is not named Ad Astra in "Ad Astra," so stop thinking that. That's not true! His name is Roy. He is dealing with Dad stuff in outer space. We discuss James Gray's new movie, as well as Sylvester Stallone trotting out Rambo one more time in "Rambo: Last Blood." Then, in our Reboot movie, we look at 2007's Pixar film "Ratatouille." How does it hold up?  12:22 "Ad Astra" 36:09 "Rambo: Last Blood" 59:44 "Ratatouille" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful,...

"Hustlers," "The Goldfinch," "8 1/2"

September 16, 2019 02:27 - 1 hour

Grierson's back! After a two-plus-week absence while traveling to the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival, Grierson has returned to us! He gives us the best and worst films from each festival, and then dives right back in with discussions of two movies out this weekend. First, it's the Jennifer Lopez stripper-crime-drama "Hustlers," and then it's the adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Goldfinch."  Our reboot isn't messing around either: It's the Federico Fellin...

"It, Chapter Two," "Vampire's Kiss"

September 08, 2019 19:34 - 1 hour

Hello! Grierson still is not back from the Toronto Film Festival, so our fill-in guest with Will is the great Bilge Ebiri, film critic for Vulture and New York Magazine. He is the best. Together, Will and Bilge discuss the horror sequel/part two "It, Chapter Two," with bigger actors this time. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look at the 1988 Nicolas Cage cult "classic," "Vampire's Kiss." Apologies, by the way: The podcast was recorded in mono for reasons we don't entirely understand. We think...

Grierson and Leitch Conversations: Jessica Pressler

September 05, 2019 15:29 - 44 minutes

New concept alert! We proudly introduce "Grierson and Leitch Conversations," in which we sit down with someone OTHER than each other to talk movie stuff, or culture stuff, or sports stuff, or whatever stuff! It'll be fun. We can't just talk to each other FOREVER. We introduce the occasional, sporadic series with Jessica Pressler, a longtime writer for New York Magazine whose 2015 story "The Hustlers at Scores" was adapted into the upcoming film "Hustlers," starring Jennifer Lopez. Jessica tal...

2019 Venice and Toronto Film Festivals Preview, "Ready Or Not," "The Fifth Element"

August 25, 2019 14:32 - 1 hour

Grierson is about to head to Venice and then Toronto for the biggest film festivals of the fall, so we preview both of 'em: There's some good stuff coming out. Then we talk about the Evil 1 Percenter movie "Ready Or Not." And none of that prepares us for the insanity of returning to 1997 and watching Luc Besson's unhinged "The Fifth Element." That movie is nuts. Timestamps (approximate): 9:03 Film Festival Previews 36:15 "Ready Or Not" 52:10 "The Fifth Element" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Fr...

"Where'd You Go Bernadette," "Blinded by the Light," "The Lost Boys"

August 20, 2019 01:20 - 1 hour

Richard Linklater having a new movie coming out is usually cause for celebration in Grierson & Leitch land, but "Where'd You Go Bernadette" is a major disappointment. We also discuss "Blinded by the Light," which is about Bruce Springsteen, kind of. Also, in our Reboot, we dig into Joel Schumaker's 1987 teen vampire flick "The Lost Boys." Timestamps (approximate): 9:39 "Where'd You Go Bernadette" 28:04 "Blinded by the Light" 45:16 "The Lost Boys" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both...

"The Kitchen," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," "Beyond the Black Rainbow"

August 12, 2019 02:56 - 1 hour

Strange week! Hard week. Relax with us with some movie talk. First, it's the odd Women Gangster movie "The Kitchen." Then the Guillermo Del Toro-produced "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," or, as Grierson puts it, "Tonka's My First Horror Movie." Then it's Reboot time, with Panos Cosmatos' wild 2012 head trip "Beyond the Black Rainbow." Timestamps (approximate): 10:50 "The Kitchen" 30:12 "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" 44:41 "Beyond the Black Rainbow" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend...

"Hobbs and Shaw," "About Time," "Perfect Blue"

August 05, 2019 00:34 - 1 hour

Yep, there's another Fast and the Furious movie. This now makes nine. This one has The Rock and Jason Statham, and it's "Hobbs & Shaw." It's directed by a man named Leitch, but not our co-host. We also have two reboots: The 2013 rom-com (kinda) "About Time," and the 1997 Japanese animation classic "Perfect Blue." 9:3327:3648:44 Timestamps (approximate): 10:33 "Hobbs & Shaw" 29:16 "About Time" 50:44 "Perfect Blue" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the m...

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Updated Tarantino Rankings, "The Shining"

July 27, 2019 19:22 - 1 hour

Yep, here's our big Tarantino episode. First, we go long on Quentin Tarantino's fascinating "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." Honestly, we could have talked even longer. Then we, because it's the law, each give our Top 10 Tarantino Movies. They're different, but not as different as we thought. And if that weren't enough ... then, in our Reboot segment, we talk about a little movie called "The Shining." Kubrick! It's, uh, a packed show. Timestamps (approximate): 8:38 "Once Upon a Time in Hollyw...

"The Lion King," "The Princess Bride," "Cache"

July 21, 2019 14:32 - 1 hour

It has been a long time since critics were as actively divided about a big movie as they are "The Lion King." We are no different: One of us is down, and one is definitely not. Also, some fun, very different Reboots this week. We look at Rob Reiner's "The Princess Bride" and Michael Haneke's "Cache." As we said: Different. Timestamps: 10:06 "The Lion King" 34:30 "The Princess Bride" 55:25 "Cache" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you...

"The Farewell," "Stuber," "Crawl," "Poetry"

July 15, 2019 02:05 - 1 hour

There was only one new movie we could get Will and Tim to even agree on watching this week: Lulu Wang's heralded "The Farewell." Grierson saw "Stuber," and Leitch saw "Crawl." Eh! Much better business in the Reboot, when we discussed Lee Chang-Dong's "Poetry" from 2012. Timestamps: 7:52 "The Farewell" 27:00 "Stuber" 35:18 "Crawl" 49:10 "Poetry" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on...

"Spider-Man: Far From Home," "Midsommar," "Ocean's 11"

July 08, 2019 01:21 - 1 hour

Hey, hope you had a great Fourth! We've got two really big new movies for you this week. First, it's the next Marvel movie -- and last for a while, maybe? -- with "Spider-Man: Far From Home." Then we look at Ari Aster's, uh, polarizing new horror film "Midsommar." Then, in our Reboot segment, we go back to 2001, and Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's 11." Timestamps (approximate): 6:45 "Spider-Man: Far From Home" 32:00 "Midsommar" 57:09 "Ocean's 11" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of...

Best Movies of the First Half of 2019, "Yesterday," "That Thing You Do!"

July 01, 2019 01:51 - 1 hour

We're halfway through 2019! Can you believe that? That's crazy. That means it's time for our annual Best Movies of the First Half of the Year show. We only have one crossover. We also discuss one new movie, the Danny Boyle Beatles fantasy "Yesterday." Our Reboot is another musical movie, Tom Hanks' directorial debut "That Thing You Do!" Timestamps (approximate): 48:41 "Yesterday" 1:09:24 "That Thing You Do!" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music....

"Toy Story 4," "Child's Play," "The Hunt for Red October"

June 24, 2019 01:29 - 1 hour

It's the Pixar movie you've been waiting nine years for, another one that'll make you cry: It's "Toy Story 4." Don't worry: It doesn't kill your childhood. We also look at the new version of the '80s horror "classic" "Child's Play." And then there's a big fun Reboot, John McTiernan's thriller "The Hunt for Red October." Timestamps (approximate): 10:12 "Toy Story 4" 39:00 "Child's Play" 1:00:53 "The Hunt for Red October" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, fo...

"Men In Black: International," "The Dead Don't Die," "Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story," "Shaft"

June 17, 2019 00:33 - 1 hour

No Reboot this week, because we've got four spanking new movies for us both to discuss. There's the "Men in Black" branding exercise, Jim Jarmusch's new film "The Dead Don't Die," Martin Scorsese's Netflix documentary (sort of) about Bob Dylan "Rolling Thunder Revue" and ... another Shaft movie. (This has not been the best summer.) Timestamps (approximate): 7:23 "Men In Black: International" 24:28 "The Dead Don't Die" 45:33 "Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story" 1:08:15 "Shaft" Thanks to ...

"Dark Phoenix," "Late Night," "The Last Black Man in San Francisco," "Pontypool"

June 09, 2019 20:49 - 1 hour

Congratulations, America: You are finally done with the "X-Men" movies. OK, not really, but "Dark Phoenix" is a lackluster end to a once-excellent franchise. We discuss. We also get into Mindy Kaling's "Late Night." (We're split on that one.) Grierson solos on "The Last Black Man in San Francisco," and then, in our Reboot segment, we check out the 2008 pseudo-zombie Canadian thriller "Pontypool." Timestamps (approximate): 8:00 "Dark Phoenix" 23:50 "Late Night" 44:15 "The Last Black Man in San...

"Godzilla: King of the Monsters," "Rocketman," "Animal House"

June 03, 2019 01:37 - 1 hour

Wait, there's another Godzilla movie? There is! It's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters." It's ... another Godzilla movie. Also, there is another movie about a classic rock star. This time Elton John gets the biopic treatment in "Rocketman." We disagree on that one. Also, in our Reboot segment, we have another "Will and Tim soil the favorite movies of your youth" entry, as we talk about 1978's "Animal House." Timestamps (approximate): 9:52 "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" 29:10 "Rocketman" 54:00...

2019 Cannes Wrapup, "Aladdin," "Booksmart," "Mad Max"

May 27, 2019 01:37 - 1 hour

Grierson is back from Cannes! He tells us about his favorite movie from Cannes, as well as a brief scoop on Quentin Tarantino's movie and that movie with all the butts. Then it's time for the two big movies of the weekend, the "Aladdin" remake with Will Smith and Olivia Wilde's "Booksmart." And hey, it's Reboot time, with the original "Mad Max" from 1979. Timestamps (approximate): 6:55 2019 Cannes Film Festival Wrapup 24:55 "Aladdin" 43:55 "Booksmart" 54:49 "Mad Max" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and...

"John Wick Chapter Three," "The Souvenir," "No Country For Old Men"

May 19, 2019 23:51 - 1 hour

Grierson is in Cannes! But he takes a break from all the Cannes business to talk with Will about "John Wick Chapter Three" and "The Souvenir." Then, an Oscar-winning Reboot: The Coen brothers' "No Country For Old Men." How does it hold up? Timestamps (approximate) 9:15 "John Wick: Chapter Three" 33:10 "The Souvenir" 40:49 "No Country For Old Men" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch ...

"Wine Country," "Pokemon Detective Pikachu," 2019 Cannes Preview

May 13, 2019 00:55 - 1 hour

Grierson is about to head to the Cannes Film Festival, so he's got plenty to preview with that whole business. But first: Two new movies. We kick it off with Amy Poehler's "Wine Country," which is ... sort of a bummer. Then, oh man, are we REALLY talking about "Pokemon Detective Pikachu?" Well, at least there's a Cannes Film Festival preview after that. Timestamps (approximate) 7:45 "Wine Country" 28:00 "Pokemon Detective Pikachu" 43:08 2019 Cannes Preview Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend ...

"Long Shot," "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile," Summer Movie Preview

May 06, 2019 02:10 - 1 hour

We're still living in a post-"Avengers: Endgame" world, but there are in fact other movies out there. We discuss two! First, the Charlize Theron-Seth Rogen romantic comedy "Long Shot." And then: Zac Efron as Ted Bundy in Joe Berlinger's "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Then it's time for our moderately sized Summer Movie Preview. Timestamps (approximate): 9:32 "Long Shot" 31:04 "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are...

"Avengers: Endgame," "Goldfinger"

April 29, 2019 01:41 - 1 hour

It's probably going to the highest-grossing movie of all time, and you all saw it this weekend. So let's get to it: Let's dig into "Avengers: Endgame." We still have time for a Reboot: It's 1966's "Goldfinger," the third-ever James Bond movie. Busy week! Timestamps:  6:49 "Avengers: Endgame"  53:27 "Goldfinger" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail....

"Under the Silver Lake," "Boogie Nights," "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover"

April 22, 2019 02:17 - 1 hour

We have a little announcement to make at the beginning of the show, but don't worry, it's a good one. Then we discuss the cult-film-in-the-making "Under the Silver Lake," with Andrew Garfield. The real fun comes from the Reboots, with Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights" and Peter Greenaway's "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover." Timestamps: 10:44 "Under the Silver Lake" 36:20 "Boogie Nights" 1:06:12 "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend ...

"Hellboy," "Her Smell," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"

April 15, 2019 02:16 - 1 hour

They made a new "Hellboy" movie? They did. And it is bad. Much better is Alex Ross Perry's "Her Smell," with Elizabeth Moss. But whatever your thoughts about either movie, neither is going to stand the test of time like Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." (In that order.) Timestamps:  9:27 "Hellboy"  29:44 "Her Smell"  46:50 "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what yo...

"Shazam!" "Pet Semetary," "High Life," "Amazing Grace"

April 07, 2019 23:42 - 1 hour

New movies, and they're both hits. First, it's the DC Comics "light" version with "Shazam!" Then there's a remake of the Stephen King novel "Pet Semetary." Then Grierson solos on two art-house hits: Claire Denis' "High Life" and the long-thought-lost Aretha Franklin documentary "Amazing Grace."

"Dumbo," "The Highwaymen," "The Beach Bum"

April 01, 2019 02:07 - 1 hour

First off, we apologize for the slightly worse audio mixing on this episode: It's Leitch's fault, he thought his mic was plugged in but wasn't. Sorry. Three new movies this week: Tim Burton's "Dumbo," John Lee Hancock's "The Highwaymen" and whatever the hell Harmony Korine is doing with "The Beach Bum." Also, Grierson talks briefly about "Diane."

"Us," "Dragged Across Concrete," "Roll Red Roll," "Rumble Fish"

March 25, 2019 02:39 - 1 hour

There isn't much of a bigger story in movies right now than the release of a new Jordan Peele movie, and "Us" looks like it might be even a bigger hit than "Get Out." How does it compare to that movie, and how does it stand on its own? We have an extended conversation. Then we look at the Mel Gibson-Vince Vaughn cop thriller "Dragged Across Concrete," and the Steubenville documentary "Roll Red Roll." Then, in our Reboot segment, we look at Francis Ford Coppola's odd "Rumble Fish."

"Triple Frontier," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Haute Tension"

March 18, 2019 02:52 - 1 hour

There's one new movie this week, from Netflix: J.C. Chandor's "Triple Frontier." Ben Affleck! Oscar Isaac! It is ... not that inspired. What IS inspired is "Zero Dark Thirty," which we discuss in our Reboot segment. What a movie. Also: The French horror film "Haute Tension."

"Captain Marvel," "Gloria Bell," "Apollo 11," "The Apartment"

March 11, 2019 01:50 - 1 hour

"Captain Marvel" might not be the most ambitious or original Marvel movie, but it's still a historic one, and not just because of the box office receipts. We dig into the origin story, and how it leads into the next (and final?) "Avengers" movie. Grierson solos on "Gloria Bell" and "Apollo 11," and then we dig into our Reboot movie, the Best Picture-winning Billy Wilder film "The Apartment."

"Leaving Neverland," "Climax," 'Greta"

March 03, 2019 21:40 - 1 hour

The movie everyone's talking about this weekend didn't get a theatrical release at all, but we felt it had to be discussed: HBO's shattering documentary "Leaving Neverland." It's quite an experience. It's strange that a Gaspar Noe movie could be "lighter" fare, but his "Climax" has received his best reviews in years. Also, we dig into Neil Jordan's weird, tonally off "Greta,"

2019 Oscars Recap, "Fighting With My Family," "Paddleton," "Badlands"

February 25, 2019 15:48 - 1 hour

The Oscars were last night! We made Grierson get up SUPER early in Los Angeles to recap the evening, which was surprisingly excellent ... until the very end. Argh. Then we discuss the WWE fantasy "Fighting With My Family" and Netflix's "Paddleton." And in our Reboot section, we dig into Terrence Malick's "Badlands."

2019 Oscars Preview, "Alita: Battle Angel," "Interview With The Vampire"

February 18, 2019 04:11 - 1 hour

It's Oscars Week! And boy oh boy are these Oscars going to be a fiasco. Tim and Will talk about the slow-motion disaster this award season has been, and then they make their predictions for the major categories. Then they look at the Robert Rodriguez-James Cameron collaboration "Alita: Battle Angel." Then we've got quite the Reboot: 1994's "Interview With The Vampire." Hoo boy, this movie.

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part," "High Flying Bird," "What Men Want"

February 11, 2019 02:57 - 1 hour

There's another Lego movie! Man, there have been a lot of those recently. This one, a sequel to the surprise hit, isn't nearly as much fun ... and honestly, what has happened to Chris Pratt? Then we climb Mount Soderbergh with his NBA heist movie "High Flying Bird." Then we close with the gender-flipped "What Men Want." And we also try to figure out what the hell just happened with Liam Neeson.

"Velvet Buzzsaw," The Films of Steven Soderbergh, "Inherit the Wind"

February 03, 2019 20:39 - 1 hour

It's another weekend in which the only interesting movie is a Netflix release. THAT has been happening a lot. We discuss Dan Gilroy's art horror satire "Velvet Buzzsaw." Then we try out a new feature, in which we analyze the career of a director before he/she has a major new release: Our test case is Steven Soderbergh. Let us know if you like the idea. Then, in our Reboot section, we look at 1960's "Inherit the Wind." Lots of courtroom shouting!

"Serenity," "25th Hour," "Galaxy Quest"

January 27, 2019 21:24 - 1 hour

Grierson is in Sundance, hittin' the slopes and hanging out in hot tubs with models and dogs in sunglasses, but he still has time for the show! Unfortunately, he hasn't seen Matthew McConaughey's and Anne Hathaway's "Serenity," but, also unfortunately, Leitch has. So they discuss that crazy-ass movie. The real fun is in the Reboots. First, we look at Spike Lee's 2002 masterpiece "25th Hour," which we both love even more than we did when we initially saw it. And then the 1999 cult comedy "Gal...

"Glass," "Fyre," 2019 Sundance Preview, "What We Do in the Shadows"

January 21, 2019 01:15 - 1 hour

M. Night Shyamalan is back! The old one! The one you didn't like. His "Glass" is the third film of a supposed trilogy, and it is by FAR the worst of the three. Also, we talk about the Netflix documentary "Fyre," though we didn't talk about the Hulu one about the Fyre Festival. (It's not as good as the Netflix one.) We also preview the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and, then, in our Reboot section, we discuss the 2014 comedy "What We Do in the Shadows."

"The Upside," 2019 Oscar Predictions, "Idiocracy"

January 14, 2019 04:26 - 1 hour

We're back! We're back! It's our first show of 2019. We missed you, like, a ton: More than you could possibly know! We kick off 2019 with our first review of the year, the Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston-Nicole Kidman dramedy "The Upside." It's not as bad as it could have been! Then we give our Oscar nomination predictions. Weird year. Also: Who's hosting? We finish up with our Reboot movie, 2006's "Idiocracy," from Mike Judge.

Dorkfest 2018: The Best Movies of 2018

December 20, 2018 04:57 - 2 hours

It's here! It's here! It's our annual extravaganza, both of our lists of the best movies of 2018. It's our favorite show every year. Let it get you through the holiday season. Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or [email protected]. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.

"Vice"

December 17, 2018 16:59 - 33 minutes

They wouldn't let us post our review of "Vice" until noon ET on December 17. So here it is, getting its own episode. We are very much in agreement on our thoughts about "Vice." Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or [email protected]. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.

"The Mule," "If Beale Street Could Talk," "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse"

December 17, 2018 03:25 - 1 hour

We've come to nearly the end of this movie year, and we've got three huge releases to discuss ... and that doesn't even include "Vice," which we can't get to until tomorrow. First, it's Clint Eastwood directing himself for the first time in a decade -- with Bradley Cooper! -- in "The Mule." Then, Barry Jenkins follows up "Moonlight" with the James Baldwin adaptation "If Beale Street Could Talk." And then there's the animated, wild spinoff "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." We're so close now.

"Roma," "Vox Lux," "Ben Is Back"

December 10, 2018 04:09 - 1 hour

Time for the dead sprint toward the end of the year, with three big releases with just a couple of weeks left until our end of the year event, Dorkfest, the release of our top 10 films of the year. So let's get to it. First, it's Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma," which won Best Picture from both the New York and Los Angeles Critics Associations. Then it's Brady Corbet's and Natalie Portman's wildly ambitious "Vox Lux." We end with Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges' drug addiction drama "Ben Is Back."

Post-Thanksgiving Leftovers Mailbag, "The House That Jack Built," "The Player"

December 03, 2018 03:47 - 1 hour

Mailbag time! We take advantage of a quick down week in the movie release schedule to answer all sorts of questions from you, our amazing listeners. You are the best. We could talk to you all day. Dig in: It's one of our favorite shows of the year. There's one new release, the one-night-only shock cinema freakshow that is Lars Von Trier's "The House That Jack Built." Then, in our Reboot, our final Reboot of 2018, it's, somehow, our first Robert Altman movie: 1992's "The Player."

"Creed II," "The Favourite," "Ralph Breaks the Internet"

November 26, 2018 03:00 - 1 hour

It's late in the movie year: It's when the bodies hit the floor! Well, they do in "Creed II," the eighth Rocky movie, though Grierson thinks it should just be called "Rocky IV II." Then we revisit our old pal Yorgos Lanthimos and his acidic comedy "The Favourite." Also, Grierson solos on the animated sequel "Ralph Breaks the Internet." If only something would.

"Widows," "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," "Green Book"

November 19, 2018 05:01 - 1 hour

We've got all sorts of fun for you this week, with two big huge movies from two of our favorite Oscar-winning directors. First, it's Steve McQueen's heist thriller "Widows." Then the Coen brothers have some fun with the Western with Netflix's "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs." There's a much more boring movie after that, the next wizard world flick "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald." And then there's early Oscar favorite, if you can believe that, "Green Book."

"The Grinch," "Overlord," "The Girl in the Spider's Web," "Outlaw King"

November 12, 2018 03:03 - 1 hour

Lots of uninspiring movies this week, we're sad to say. But hopefully you won't find the show itself uninspired. First, Grierson hammers "The Grinch" for a while, and then we both dig into the J.J. Abrams-produced "Overlord," the reboot/sequel "The Girl in the Spider's Web," and Netflix's "Outlaw King." No Reboot this week: Too many mediocre new releases to get to!

"Bohemian Rhapsody," "The Other Side of the Wind," "Thunder Road," "Boy Erased," "Freeway"

November 04, 2018 21:30 - 1 hour

This is real life, and this is just a fantasy. It's the Queen musical biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody," and one of us really likes it, and one of us very much does not. Then it's into the depths of film history with a look at Orson Welles' final "film," "The Other Side of the Wind," salvaged by Netflix. We chat briefly about "Thunder Road" and "Boy Erased" before going to Reboot land with 1996's "Freeway" with Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland.

"Burning," "Suspiria," "Primer"

October 29, 2018 02:04 - 1 hour

One of the best reviewed movies of the year, currently only available for New Yorkers but hitting theaters nationwide soon, is Lee Chang-Dong's "Burning," based on a Haruki Murakami short story. We dig into what makes it so great. Then Grierson solos on "Suspiria," as well as a few good documentaries. And people are still talking about Shane Carruth's "Primer" 14 years after it came out. We try to make heads or tails of it ourselves in our Reboot segment.

"Halloween," "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" "Wildlife," "mid-90s," "Memories of Murder"

October 22, 2018 02:49 - 1 hour

We've got the biggest October opening of all-time this week with "Halloween," both a sequel and homage to the classic John Carpenter film. But then Grierson has to go solo on three new movies, all of which are fascinating in their own way. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look at Bong Joon-ho's "Memories of Murder," from all the way back in 2003.

"First Man," "22 July," "Bad Times at the El Royale,"Sara "The Kindergarten Teacher," "Beautiful Boy"

We are jam-packed with movies this week: It is clearly that time of the year. The big release of the weekend is Damien Chazelle's "First Man," a look at Neil Armstrong and the moon landing. Grierson likes it, but Leitch LOVE it. We also dig into Paul Greengrass' "22 July," the Drew Goddard genre-hopper "Bad Times at the El Royale" and Maggie Gyllenhaal in "The Kindergarten Teacher." And Grierson solos on "Beautiful Boy," starring Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carell.

"A Star Is Born," "Venom," "Private Life," "The Hate U Give," "Major League"

It's a "Star Is Born" world: The rest of us just get to live here occasionally. Bradley Cooper's and Lady Gaga's big musical melodrama dominates the screens this week, but we've got tons of other releases, from the comic book oddity "Venom" to Tamara Jenkins' great "Private Life" to the YA adaptation "The Hate U Give." And with the baseball playoffs going on, we look at 1989's "Major League" in our reboot section. It's a long one, but a good one.
