Their life expectancy is ranked 47th in the country at 75.9 years.

The state’s infant mortality rate is 7.7. The national rate is 5.8.


The state’s teen birth rate is 27.4 births per 1,000, ranking them 4th in the country. And, in the state, 1-in-5 births to girls ages 15 through 19 is not their first child.


The Turnaway Study recruited 1000 women seeking abortions at 30 facilities in 21 states. Half the women were able to have abortions, and half were turned away. After, they were interviewed by phone every six months for five years.


Here’s what the study found:


Six months after they sought an abortion, 61% were below the U.S. federal poverty level, compared with 45% among the group who received an abortion just under the limit. At the same point, people in the former group were also more likely to be unemployed at a rate of 51% (versus 37% among women who had an abortion).


Additionally, between one and five years after seeking an abortion, women denied the abortion were more likely to report not having enough money to cover living expenses.
