Suffering and pain are a significant part of our experience in a fallen world. And at times we may feel as if God has left, as if we are treading our darkest moments alone. David pens this song of faith in one such experience. His pain and depression are real, and he wonders why God has left him. Yet, while he is writing out of this pain, something even more incredible happens as the Spirit inspires David to write words that will be repeated by Jesus on the cross and which will prophecy in vivid imagery that event. God has not abandoned David, nor us. Rather, God is the one who brings redemptive beauty through our suffering by entering into our pain. He suffers with us. But more important, Jesus suffers for us. As we enter Easter week this Psalm will lift our eyes to the cross and the beautiful truth that because God left Christ on the cross we can know that we are never truly alone.
