On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk through the common issues that many drivers have that some are much better setting the pace while leading another car and others are much faster trying to catch a car ahead of them.  Are you a better leader?  Or are you a better chaser or follower?  Does it matter?  Should it matter?  We discuss our opinions.  Please let us know your thoughts. November 08, 2021 08:30 - 1 hour - 50.5 MB

Kim Coffey has been a car girl from a very young age and has recently discovered her passion for driving her car at the limit.  It all started with a Supra Sunday with NASA and once the hook was set, she was off.  She loves and drives her 2020 Toyota Supra for HPDE events, autocrosses and has even started Sim racing.  If that wasn’t enough, she often takes her lunch at a local go kart track.  We thought we would go over where she is this early in her driving journey and we are looking forwar...

November 02, 2021 07:30 - 16 minutes - 13.8 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we talk through the importance of optimizing the pressure in your tires.  No doubt this is of great importance to the performance of the tire as well as affecting the wear characteristics of the tire.  We go through what you should try to target and several methods that can be used to determine the optimum tire pressure.  Each method is a balance of cost, ease, and accuracy.  There is no doubt we will revisit this topic again, probably more than once....

GHIT 0252:  Tom Suddard from Grassroots Motorsports Magazine

November 01, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 49.8 MB

Tom Suddard is the Director of Marketing and Digital Assets at GRM.  Tom’s first visit to our podcast was with zero notice and was at the invitation of Nine Live Racing’s Johnny C on episode #209 when we had our first episode on Aero.  In spite of this, Tom decided to put up with us again in what we hope will be a long list of bad decisions in the future.  What do you ask of a prolific supplier of articles and videos aimed at helping grass roots racers and drivers improve?  Well, we choose t...

GHIT 0250:  Ross Bentley Coaches Our Team

October 25, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 89.8 MB

Did you ever wonder what a driving coach does for their driver?  We were always curious.  Ross Bentley was kind enough to show us the start of the process.   Ross Bentley was kind enough to continue our tradition of having him on as a guest to help us celebrate every 50 episode anniversary.  And as long as he keeps saying yes, we will keep asking him, lol.  For this episode, Ross was kind enough to offer to help coach Vicki and Jennifer.  While the exact recommendations may vary between th...

DwD 0249: Fast Hands vs Slow Hands

October 19, 2021 07:30 - 11 minutes - 9.96 MB

In this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we discuss the debate between fast hands and slow hands.  The natural tendency of each driver varies, often by how they grew up.  Go karters and autocrossers usually have a tendency to have faster hands.  Ben discusses with us the usefulness of both and what we think of as the "proper" hand speed.   Also, Ben stakes a very strong claim in the debate between Eric Clapton and Eddie van Halen. If you would like to help the podcast, you can subscribe...

October 12, 2021 07:30 - 25 minutes - 21 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we are finally able to discuss what lift off oversteer is thanks to a recent article that Bill found on the internet.  At least we now know what it is and how we can address this potential issue on the track.  The fourth time is the charm.  Finally.  Lol. If you would like to help the podcast, you can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice. This includes the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if...

Everyday Driver started as one of the early YouTube channels in 2007 and again they started an early podcast in 2014 that Bill first discovered in late August.  The fundamental premise for Everyday Driver is that cars can and should be fun and they work tirelessly to help by testing virtually all types of new cars and many used cars.  In addition, a majority of their podcast segments are aimed at helping their listeners to find the car that matches their needs and maximizes the fun of drivin...

GHIT 0241: Our Garage Weekend with Alex Levinson

September 24, 2021 07:30 - 37 minutes - 42 MB

Alex Levinson has a ton or racing and wrenching experience, especially with Miatas of all vintages.  So when he "volunteered" to come over for a work weekend, we quickly lined up everything we could think of to finish up several projects on each of the team's 3 Miatas.  However, our best laid plans did not come together as we had hoped.  New car lift?  Worked great and a game changer!  Bribe/food prep was as always on point.  Listen and learn about what can happen on a work weekend, especial...

DwD 0240: Driving Plateaus and How to Break Through Them

September 21, 2021 07:30 - 22 minutes - 18.8 MB

In this Dominating with Dawson episode, Ben goes over his personal plateau story and what it means to be stuck at a driving plateau.  To this point, our team has not been at a plateau and has been slowly or quickly improving to this point.  One of the key areas to look at for breaking plateaus is to do something new or differently and learn from it.  This is where going to an HPDE, doing drills, trying new lines, and utilizing coaching can help you to see an opportunity to improve.  If you d...

GHIT 0239:  Jaime Garcia from the Race FF Pod

September 20, 2021 07:30 - 55 minutes - 43 MB

Jaime Garcia started the Race FF Podcast to share with everyone his racing and building progress and to help everyone get started in racing by showing them that it can be done.  Since we have essentially the same goals, it was natural to have him on the podcast.  As his podcast title indicates, Jaime races a Front engine Front wheel drive in both HPDE, time trials, and wheel to wheel.  His current target is competing in Honda Challenge in southern California.  Further parallels between the p...

September 15, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 91 MB

It all started with a great idea, let’s go to an HPDE event with the hosts of the Shifting Points podcast. Audra had raced with us at the Thompson race in August and Jess & Kathy had visited for moral support and wanted to try track driving.  There was a ladies event with MassTuning set for mid September.  Sounds like a blast.  Until it wasn’t. In what was supposed to be a two episode celebration of this event, we go into the prep and excitement of going into a track event and how things e...

DwD 0237:  Oppo Luck AKA Counter Steer

September 14, 2021 07:30 - 8 minutes - 7.6 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we play our jeopardy jargon game with Ben and go into the topic of (Bill lost his place) oppo lock or counter steer and how it can be used on track.   You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the ...

GHIT 0236:  Tim Fokine - Pilot/Racer, Instructor and Racing Instructor

September 13, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 71.1 MB

Tim Fokine is a commercial pilot and also involved with the training of pilots, as such it was no surprise that he is involved with the training of drivers and instructors within NASA Great Lakes and a few other groups.  Bill first met Tim in HPDE 2 at Mid Ohio and Tim was further motivated to progress quickly, lol.  This past week however, like a bad penny, Bill was back and Tim was his mentor in his prep weekend sessions for next month’s MSF Level 2 instructor certification weekend.  Durin...

GHIT 0235: GHiT Garage, Podcast, and Team Update

September 08, 2021 07:30 - 37 minutes - 30.2 MB

The Garage Heroes In Training team has had quite a summer on the track so far and with our racing season beginning to wind down, but far from done on the track, we thought we would bring everyone up to speed with where we are with the podcast, how our driving and racing is progressing, and what our car related projects are going into the fall and winter repair and build programs.  This is a quick episode, but we have so many moving balls (people and cars) it may appear random or confusing at...

DwD 0234:  Jargon 101: Body Roll - No, not a Jelly Roll

September 07, 2021 07:30 - 8 minutes - 8.02 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go over jargon again and cover what body roll is, how it affects your car, and how it can help and hurt you on track.  The physics of racing are consistent and not able to be broken, but knowing them allows you to use them to your benefit and minimize any deleterious impacts through driving accommodations and potentially in setting up or building your vehicle.  Ben even offers several of the potential knobs that can be turned to affect the degree a...

GHIT 0233:  Ken Hill on Driving and Riding

September 06, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 76.4 MB

Ken Hill is an accomplished motorcycle racer and sought after coach.  Ken was kind enough to join us for a great discussion on track driving and riding.  While often thought of as very different, most of the skills and techniques translate fully between riding a motorcycle and driving a car on a track.  Ken has a podcast that goes into a lot of Ken’s preferred techniques and philosophies about track riding that Ken had developed to assist him in his personal progression as a competitive race...

DwD 0231:  Breaking Down A Turn - One Approach

August 31, 2021 13:30 - 14 minutes - 12.6 MB

DwD 0231:  Breaking Down A Turn - One Approach On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go over a way that (hopefully future guest) Ken Hill breaks down a turn into entry turns and exit turns where you can prioritize either speed in, or speed out of a turn or balance of both.  The discussion goes into a few different directions than originally intended, but hopefully this discussion will help you when driving on track. You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your c...

August 30, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 68.6 MB

WOOT 0229: The Suicide Squad and Comparing the MCU and DCEU

August 25, 2021 07:30 - 2 hours - 110 MB

WOOT Stands for Way Off Our (normal) Topic so this is NOT a driving or racing episode What began as a simple review of James Gunn's new movie The Suicide Squad quickly became a debate of the DC Extended Universe and the MCU from Marvel.  Benny and Alex return to their WOOT origin and feel Bill is biased against the DCEU.  So we rank all the DCEU and the MCU movies to date and discuss the upcoming movies in both series.  We also had a short discussion of the first three Marvel tv shows on D...

DwD 0228: Why Race Cars Don't have Airbags or Steering Wheel Locks

August 24, 2021 07:30 - 8 minutes - 7.55 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go over why most of our racing series require the steering wheel lock to be removed from the vehicle and why airbags are not used in race cars.  Apparently, the police were in the area during our discussion, apologies for the sirens.   Neither of these will help you on track in a race car and both can actually hurt you if left in place.

GHIT 0227:  Our Race Review of the Thompson 2021 - Part Deux

August 23, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 66.3 MB

We finally have the whole El Jeffe team together to discuss our all ladies piloted team.  Elizabeth and Audra joined Jennifer and Vicki to talk about the race, how things went over the weekend and if/when the ladies will be returning to the track together.  The results of the race were exceptional.  The only issues we had that were racing related were due to the initial issue we fixed on Saturday.  Considering that this was Audra’s first ever wheel to wheel race and Elizabeth had only entere...

DwD 0226: Adapting a Car to the Driver or the Driver to the Car

August 16, 2021 19:02 - 28 minutes - 22.9 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we discuss the mutual ideas of adapting a car to a driver and adapting your driving to the car.  Both of these are keys to improving your performance at and especially during a race.  We even have a great time with Vicki and Ben bulldozing each other several times in a row. Lol.  We lost the last few seconds so this one ends a bit more abruptly than we had hoped.

August 12, 2021 14:20 - 55 minutes - 44.7 MB

Our ladies team came to Thompson and even though the entire prep week blew up in our face, the weekend as a whole went fantastically.  Vicki and Jen go over some of the highs and lows of the race on this episode.  We are hopeful for a part 2 with Audra and Elizabeth, and perhaps even Alan, to go over their thoughts on the weekend.  The El Jeffe race truck stumbled a bit at the beginning of the weekend, but we were able to work through the problem eventually with a bit of help from our friend...

DwD 0223: Tossing a Car Into a Turn - Jargon 101

August 11, 2021 19:00 - 9 minutes - 8.05 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we cover the new to Jennifer term of tossing a car into a turn.  While it seems to be losing popularity, we have heard it a few times at the track in the paddock, so in our pursuit of not looking like we don't know anything, we thought we would cover it here.  We then move into a discussion of driving styles and choices that may help you as well. A link to the episode:  https://tinyurl.com/DwD223

GHIT 0222:  Ryan Power - Life as a New Racing Driver

August 11, 2021 14:45 - 1 hour - 56.6 MB

Ryan Power recently graduated from comp school with his racing license and competes in wheel to wheel sprint races in his 2019 ND2 Miata.  Bill had met Ryan and been driving at HPDE’s with Ryan for the past few seasons.  While still relatively new at racing, Ryan’s results are very good for his rookie season with several podium finishes and race wins.  Unfortunately, Ryan has also experienced a significant incident on track and seen the inherent risk in racing wheel to wheel.  We wanted to c...

DwD 0220: Jargon 101: What is a Log Book and What Does It Entail

August 03, 2021 07:30 - 9 minutes - 7.91 MB

On this issue of Dominating with Dawson, we go into what is meant by log booking or having a race car that is log booked.  It is really not terribly complicated but it is something that you may eventually need to do and it is always better to not sound uninformed.  Let us do that for you, lol.  (PS It turns out we do have a log book from Lucky Dog, we just didn't know that was what it was.) You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast...

GHIT 0215: GHIT Host/Driver Updated Introductions - Alan

July 26, 2021 18:08 - 1 hour - 69.7 MB

It has been several years since we did our host/driver introductions and we thought we’d update our newer listeners with a bit of background from each of our hosts.   Alan joined our team about 2 minutes after Vicki posted something about our first race.  He has been a car guy since birth and is a trained mechanic and worked on real cars for several years prior to joining our team.  Alan has succeeded in getting all four of his immediate family to race with us, as well as his brother.  He ...

GHIT 0214: GHIT Host/Driver Updated Introductions - Bill

July 21, 2021 07:30 - 2 hours - 136 MB

It has been several years since we did our host/driver introductions and we thought we would update our newer listeners with a bit of background from each of our hosts.   You can probably blame Bill for most of our team and our podcast, but he does have noble goals, lol.  Bill was essentially a newbie to racing, driving, and pretty much remains so as far as car mechanical skills.  As always, our motto of “if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing” applies to our team, our cars, and his dri...

July 19, 2021 07:30 - 2 hours - 96.5 MB

Tiffany Kelly and Justin Kelly are both top drivers in the GLTC series and have competed as Team Kelly Racing.  In addition, they have a racing school to teach other drivers and also race shifter karts to further hone their skills.  During this episode...

July 12, 2021 23:50 - 1 hour - 71.2 MB

It has been several months since we did a WOOT episode where we go Way Off Our Topic of racing and go into another are of our lives, our fandom of virtually all things superheroes.  In this episode , we go over our thoughts about the three recent Disney+ MCU related shows:  WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, as well as the most recent Black Widow movie.  This recording was prior to the season finale of Loki, so our predictions may prove accurate, insightful, or down right ...

GHIT 0211:  GHIT Host/Driver Updated Introductions - Jennifer

July 12, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 78.7 MB

It has been several years since we did our host/driver introductions and we thought we’d update our newer listeners with a bit of background from each of our hosts.   Jennifer was a self proclaimed driver that started racing at less than zero.  She attended our first race and joined the team as a driver at our second race.  She has probably improved the most of any of our drivers to this point and is now a solid race driver and continuing to improve quickly.  On this episode, we go over wh...

July 05, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 86.4 MB

It has been several years since we did our host/driver introductions and we thought we’d update our newer listeners with a bit of background from each of our hosts.  Vicki started from ground zero as a newbie to racing, driving, and car mechanics and has progressed to become one of our top mechanics and an excellent racing driver.  We go over where Vicki is currently in her driving career and what her goals are for the next few years.  As a bonus, we included the original introduction we had...

June 28, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 66.8 MB

Will aerodynamics help your racing car?  We begin to explore the field of aerodynamics with Johnny Cichowski from Nine Lives Racing on this episode.  As an introductory episode, we start with the fundamentals and work our way towards laying out a plan for adding aero to a race car that will result in actually having a faster race car.  We started with the very basics of defining most of the basic individual components and then looked at the factors that affect the performance of the car and ...

GHIT 0208:  PGR Racing - Racing In an EV in the One Lap of America

June 21, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 75 MB

“Tony Stark” was the obvious lead in to this episode with PGR Racing and their EV racing car that recently competed in the 2021 One Lap of America.  On this episode, Andrew DeKoning and Chad Martin go into the pluses and minuses of racing an electric vehicle in the One Lap of America and racing an EV in general.  We really had no reference to racing an EV, except for those unfounded rumors on several golf courses.  Bill was stuck late at work so he sounds a bit “tinny” for most of this episo...

GHIT 0207:  Our race at NJMP - June 2021

June 19, 2021 07:30 - 1 hour - 92.1 MB

We are all suffering from a serious sleep deprived, post-race weekend hangover, and we are all calling in from across the US with varying internet speed and connections.  It starts with the somewhat normal Race Bar takeover and then we go into the race.  For this event, our drivers consisted of Vicki, Alan, and Jennifer and our two adopted teammates Aaron Diamond from the Saabs of Anarchy racing team and Elazar Mann from Race Bar.  It was a great weekend with many, many highs, and a few nota...
