Heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both men and women in the USA. One doctor is trying to change this statistic through his work in developing bioprinted hearts, which he hopes will someday be utilized instead of traditional heart transplant procedures. In this podcast, Dr. Jeffrey A. Morgan, a cardiac surgeon and Chief Medical Officer for BIOLIFE4D, discusses his work in this exciting field.
He provides us with background information on heart failure, as well as insight on the current conventional therapies and their drawbacks. In doing so, he discusses procedures commonly performed to treat patients with heart failure (such as placement of heart pumps, bypass surgeries, placement of artificial hearts, mitral and aortic valve surgeries, and heart transplants) and their efficacy. He overviews the current status of the bioprinting technology and leaves us with where he believes this research may be headed in the next few years.
