Despite a growing body of research on the connection, most people still believe that sleep has little to do with dentistry. In fact, for the 27 years that Dr. Barry Raphael practiced conventional orthodontics, he—along with many other orthodontists who received conventional training—didn’t truly understand or emphasize the connection between the two. It wasn’t until about 10 years ago after encountering a typical problem in orthodontics—an open bite due to tongue thrust—that he began looking deeper into the role and impact of soft tissue development on the problem of malocclusion, unhealthy breathing, deformed airways, underdeveloped jaws, and how it's all connected to sleep.
