In this episode of Idea to Done, we talk about using marketing mistakes as a tool for learning. This is the second episode in our marketing series.

J: Welcome to another episode of Idea to Done

J/E: I'm Josh and I'm Erick

E: Today's Idea is: small businesses marketing ideas. This is the next part in our marketing series. Last time we ended on how it was important to learn from marketing mistakes.
Make mistakes! It helps you find your customer. I like posting content on Facebook. You like posting content on LinkedIn. Which one is right? Sales determines. We won’t know unless we try both. Marketing fails happen all the time. Meow mix had all sorts of advertising before it started Meow Meow Meow Meow. Something will stick. Don’t be afraid to fail.

You mean the cat food from the 90’s right??

J: I think a lot of people try social or some form of marketing and say well that didn’t work and call it a mistake. I’d shift the narrative on it a bit and call that learning, not a mistake :) I think the mistakes only happen when you don’t have an expected outcome and steps for how you end up there. If you think you are going to promote your product on Facebook to an audience that doesn’t know your business you aren’t going to sell anything, you need to warm them up and share about your company and brand.

E: And finding the right place to share your brand, and message is a challenge. Your product might make more sense on Instagram. I know a florist who is all over instagram. I rarely see their posts on Facebook. Their audience isn’t there. At the other end of the spectrum my financial planner posts things on LinkedIn because if it isn’t cat videos, or something entertaining, stay off my facebook feed. Finding the platform that makes sense for your marketing is a trial.

J: I’d challenge that a bit, her audience is on Facebook as well, but not interacting the same way. You need to shift your message to the platform. 30 min videos work well on Youtube, but not on Insta. - just repaired my car

E: And there you go, marketing ideas for small businesses. I want to stress that marketing is about learning where your marketing sticks. Meow meow meow meow… You should jump in while I am doing the meow mix song.

J: Thanks for listening, if you know a startup that could use actionable advice have them subscribe and leave a review on iTunes.
