FWEP00040 Mada Seghete

How was Mada’s journey?

They have failed on their previous projects but not giving up is the key to reach success. They connected their project to a video game, where you can have not only one life but seeing a poster in their office with only one heart that made them work differently according to Mada.

Today we have a really special guest and she is Mada Seghete and she’s the co-founder of Branch. Branch powers deep linking and mobile attribution for 35,000+ of the most advanced apps in the world.

(1:56-2:18)  We really wanted to build something and one of the most important things that you can build as start-up founder is a team, and we realized that we were very different as co-founders and have very complementary skills  so we decided to stay together and keep trying. So we keep failing and trying out new things and Branch was gonna be the last one.

(3:07-3:10) I spend a lot more time eventualizing than my co-founders do.

(3:18-3:51) I run the marketing team so I travel a lot and speak about branch. The way I built influence is really through just getting to know things really in depth and writing about it, trying to speak about it things and finding areas so I can become an expert in telling others about it. So when I write articles I try to never write things that are superficial  by going depths of certain areas and that’s kind of trying to become a thought leader in the mobile world.

(3:58-4:27) Instead of learning about everything by a little bit about this and a little bit about that I try to pick areas, for example, I do a lot of talks on virality and referrals and so I went and I research a lot  and I know a lot on how to make something viral. So instead of going and knowing everything about how to promote your app, I don’t know let’s say as much as paid advertising but I know a lot about organic so I picked one area and I just learned so much about it versus trying to be generous.

How do you lead?

Being part of the team and as a leader is not just an easy task, she’s also taking part of the pieces and doing some of the ground work.

(4:31-4:53) Everyone has different leadership styles minus based on leading by example so I think it’s if there’s things that no one else can do I try to take more on my teammates and I do my best to find ways than I can show people that I can work as hard and harder than them.

What resources and tools you use to grow your start-up?

(5:40-6:04) So I lead the marketing team, so one of the ways we grew awareness of branch is by building these communities around the world for the mobile growth communities and we have meet-ups in 55 cities around the world about 25 thousand people have come to our events. There has been like community has been one of the tools, we have content marketing has been amazing for us, we write a lot so we become experts in different areas.

How do you grow your community?

According to Mada, think of the community first. Think of the needs of the community and not your needs, why are they there and what are they trying to get out of it?

(7:14-7:53) You put really good content. So we have a recipe how to do successful meet-ups we bring really interesting people to talk we convince them by, once you do a big events you show people how I’ve done this big event come and check it out and it’s easier to convince people to come and once you’ve done it with event people will come back and they'll tell their friends about it so it’s really about focusing on the quality and putting the community first so not trying to oversell and we don’t talk too much about branch it’s all about the need of the community and not about our needs.

(8:32-8:40) To really understand what is the purpose of your community and what is in need you are trying to solve?

(8:50-9:05) We knew that that’s what they were looking for so we make sure that we always bring them quality advice but every community is different. So making sure you understand their actual need do not what your vision is.

(9:18-9:43) Just try it out, if you fail the first time it’s okay. Just keep building. Don’t be afraid to fail if you see people that want your product be humble don’t think that you know better than your customers and make sure that if you feel that the market is telling you that your ideas not quite  right, Don’t be afraid to completely quit and start something new.

How do you cope with emotions of failure?

Let go of something that is not working and if you fail, accept it. Start doing something new and learn from your failure.

(10:13-10:31) Very hard, I’ll be honest, I don’t think I could be able to give up my co-founder Alex our CEO, was a lot better than me at saying no this is not working and one of my biggest learning from working with him has been to be able to let go of projects. So I’m a lot better now.

(10:46-10:53) It’s probably the biggest advice I have to every entrepreneur. Don’t get too attached to an idea be okay admitting that it’s failing and start something new.

(11:06-) Failure is just a step in the best of success.
