Episode 14 features my interview with former NFL fullback Larry Centers, often recognized as the "greatest receiving fullback" in the league's history. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Larry owns the NFL record for most passes caught by a running back during a career.
Centers hails from Tyler, Texas and grew up playing football in Longview. He finished his high school career at Tatum HS, before earning a scholarship to play for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. A notable college career led to being drafted by the Phoenix Cardinals in the 5th round of the 1990 NFL Draft. Centers played for 14 seasons in the NFL, predominantly with the Cardinals, but also for the Redskins, Bills and Patriots (with whom he won a Super Bowl ring).
Larry's on-field receiving skills and punishing running style give way to a calm, soft-spoken demeanor on camera. He is a thoughtful and deliberate in sharing his experiences, several of which were "life changing" events that ultimately impacted his career. Centers shares this wisdom and how it propelled him to success in football, but how it also guides him today in his business pursuits.
This interview was eye-opening for me and I strongly recommend it for younger athletes, who may be struggling with their sports identity. Everyone can learn from the "life skills" lessons shared during this walk through Larry Centers' football journey.
