Quick description on the few more popular lenses out there

Prime lenses

Prime lenses are a specific group of lenses that only have one focal length. You can find them from very wide to telephoto reach and they’re very popular for their fast apertures. Since the lens don’t have the extra glass and mechanism inside they’re more sharper that zoom lenses.

Zoom lenses

Zoom lenses are the more versatile group that gives you more that one focal length. You can get wide zooms all the way to telephoto. Having a zoom lens its more practical because you’ll have more options in one package. They’re not as fast as the primes and not as sharp but it will let you shoot more since you don’t have to switch the lens or get to your other camera if you have one to get another focal length. Also the fastest the aperture the more expensive they get.

Telephoto lenses

This ones you can find them from 70mm all the way to 600mm and maybe more. They’re more used on weddings, wildlife and sports for their long reach. They come in prime and zoom options also. You can also used them for portraiture because it will give you a very nice bokeh thanks to the separation that you’ll get between the subject and the background.

Macro lenses

Macro in photography means short or closeups. They’re used for getting very small subjects in frame. Wedding photographers use them for getting details like rings and accessories and other photographers get insects or items in frame that is not be able to so with other lenses like zooms. They come with different focal lengths from 60mm all the way to 100mm or maybe more
