It’s true. Experience is the best teacher of life lessons.

In this episode of the Fire In The Belly Podcast, Mighty Pete talks to Roman Prokopchuk about how he unexpectedly discovered (and thrived in) digital marketing, how he sees fulfilment in foster parenting, and how fascinating his journey is as an immigrant (from Ukraine) in the United States.

Roman’s success didn’t come from luck, for sure—it was always pure hard work since the start. He wouldn’t accomplish anything if he hadn’t learnt to persevere and be resilient. If only people knew about these and other entrepreneurial qualities like ‘grit’, then they’d achieve or even just get closer to their goals too.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

It shouldn’t be an issue when things don’t go as planned. A resilient and quick-witted individual wouldn’t have any problem with unforeseen diversions, even in career.

For example, digital marketing isn’t the path that Ronan was hoping for, but out of necessity, he had to explore the industry. Luckily, through hard work and determination, he was able to develop a skill set that advanced his career.

Aside from being busy with his business, Ronan is a very hands-on foster parent. Ronan sees that he spends enough time with all his foster children because as much as possible, he wants the kids to feel at home and to be better individuals.

During the pandemic, it has been difficult to schedule visitations with kids’ legal guardians since face-to-face interactions are prohibited. So, he and his partner had to set everything up online for the kids. It was challenging but very rewarding, according to Ronan.

Soft skills over hard skills. Ronan prefers a team player who is passionate and driven even with less technical skills over a team player who has an impressive resume but very low enthusiasm about the job position. The willingness of someone to achieve the same aim as yours is very important.
Grit is everything you need; the root cause of it all. It’s the most vital factor to achieve success. It’s also about being not ashamed of your past traumas and being confident of who you are. Because success is not about the luck or talents, it’s about persevering even there’s little to no chance of winning.
