Healthcare expert Margarita Khosh joins Pete today to discuss the impacts COVID-19 had had on her personal life and the healthcare industry. Together, they talk through the delayed grieving process caused by COVID, how mental trauma will manifest itself physically in you and why understanding the patient experience is the key to better healthcare.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The soldier does not have a PTSD episode when they are at war. The soldier has the episode when he comes home. The health care workers are still in the trenches, there is so much trauma that is continuing to happen right now around the world that nobody is grieving yet.

COVID is a robbery, it has robbed us of the way that we grieve, we live and mourn. We cannot do anything the way that we are programmed to do.

Whatever trauma you go through in your life will manifest itself physically in your body. When the patient is physically unwell, there is no reason why healthcare workers do not address the mental well-being of that patient. If someone is being treated by the Gastroenterologists , then it makes sense for them to be seen by the mental health doctors as well.

Systems should be built that align therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists with other healthcare specialists. When this is done, the patient experience is smoother. The patient will be supported in both mind and body.

Therapists should be encouraged to discover who their ‘why’ is and who their ideal patient is. When they recognise this they are able to start leveraging relationships with the right kind of referral partners, from the area.

BEST MOMENTS

“This is when it starts to kick in. This is when the things in the world start to make an impact.”

“All of these things fired me up so much that I thought, if we learn nothing from this, then we don’t deserve to be here.”

“When we start doing that, then we are actually approaching the patient experience.”

“We have two souls and we have two hearts”
