U.S.S. Liberty: When Israel Attacked America | Larry Bowen

Navy Veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart for his service on the USS Liberty, Larry Bowen beams in to recount how he survived an Israeli military attack on America on episode 105 of the Far Out with Faust podcast.

In 1967, Israel attacked the USS Liberty, killing 34 American crew in international waters. The Liberty, a highly sophisticated reconnaissance ship, was tasked with gathering intelligence during the 6 Day War. It was brutally attacked by the Israeli military, and (allegedly) deliberately sacrificed by Lyndon Johnson’s White House.  

Larry Bowen survived the attack that day, earning a Purple Heart — and was told, like all who made it out alive — never to speak of the incident again. Fortunately, he and his fellow survivors have not been silent. Larry is a past president and part of the USS Liberty Veterans Association, an organization that has spent the past 55 years telling their firsthand accounts of the USS Liberty attack.

Larry shares details of exactly what happened that day: what he was doing prior to the air strike, including a shocking revelation about the very specific intelligence he’d gathered that day. Hear how he was injured, and his account of the many heroic acts that his fellow servicemen committed during and after the assault.

The details Larry recounts make it impossible to believe that there was any “mixup” that day — on the contrary, Israel was clearly in violation of international law on more than one count.
