Lewis Capaldi (2018)

September 03, 2020 11:00 - 24 minutes - 16.7 MB

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi was in Amsterdam to play a show at the Paradiso in December of 2018 and I had the chance to go backstage before the show for a little chat. Anyone who knows just a little bit about Lewis knows that he has a great sense of humor, is very easy to talk to, and doesn't take himself too seriously, while at the same time crafting these incredibly authentic, emotional songs. We spoke about his successes before even releasing a debut album, writing at night, ...

Fish (ex-Marillion) (2020)

September 01, 2020 12:00 - 57 minutes - 39.5 MB

Scottish singer and songwriter Derek William Dick, better known as Fish, rose to fame as the frontman for progressive rock band Marillion in the 80s, penning hits like Kayleigh and Lavender. After leaving the band Fish continued to turn heads with his solo work, culminating in his final (ever!) album Weltschmerz which is released this year. It was an absolute pleasure to talk to fish, as he was very kind with his time, his willingness to discuss any- or everything, and his very accessible pe...

Nightwish - Tuomas Holopainen (2018)

August 27, 2020 10:00 - 20 minutes - 14.2 MB

Back in 2018 I was invited to take the train up to Köln, Germany to interview Tuomas for both the Nightwish Decades album and for the debut of Auri, a band Tuomas had created with his wife and singer Johanna Kurkela and bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley. In my talk with Tuomas we journeyed through the history of the band, the various line-up changes, the music that came out of it like The Poet and The Pendulum, and arrived at where the band was now, the chemistry between them...

Glen Hansard (2015)

August 25, 2020 09:00 - 29 minutes - 20.3 MB

I was first introduced to the music of Glen Hansard through the movie Once, but it wasn't until researching him for this interview, and delving into the album Didn't He Ramble, that I got a real sense of what kind of songwriter he was. It's not just the storytelling, but the warmth, the sincerity, the emotion that draws you in. And in person, he was the same; he was open, genuine, contemplative about his own craft, all the things you need for a good conversation. We spoke about the album, ar...

The 1975 - Matt Healy (2016)

August 20, 2020 13:00 - 18 minutes - 12.8 MB

Another one of my favorites from back in 2016. Matt is such a charismatic and intelligent talker and his openness about not only the music but how he perceives things in the world and his own emotions and feelings is really engaging. Oh, and the music isn't too bad either! We spoke about self-acceptance, not having one particular sound, music as catharsis, his appreciation for fans, and a lot more!  By: Robin Hignell Support the show Thank you for listening! Slipknot: Corey Taylor (2015)

August 11, 2020 08:00 - 31 minutes - 21.5 MB

Another one of my favorites. Before we started the interview Corey and I were talking a bit. He couldn't have been more genuine and nice. Then, as I pressed record the mask went on and I must admit for the first minute or so it felt a bit strange  and intimidating. But as our conversation went on about his first introduction into metal, sharing pain and grief, doing things their own way, previous slipknot albums, and more! his kindhearted nature shined through once more. It was an absolute p...

Joe Bonamassa (2013)

July 21, 2020 15:00 - 28 minutes - 19.4 MB

This was actually my very first interview I did for FaceCulture. It was my first week, and it just so happened that I was the only one available. It didn't hurt that I harbor a strong love for the blues, so it was decided that I would be thrown into the fire and interview global star Joe Bonamassa, one of the best blues guitarists I've ever heard play. The one thing that I remember most from this interview, aside from how courteous and open Joe seemed to be, was the realization that he was j...

Passenger interview (2018)

July 21, 2020 15:00 - 15 minutes - 10.6 MB

As I walked into the Gibson guitar offices in Amsterdam (one of our favorite spots to film for obvious reasons) Mike was sitting there just noodeling on some of the guitars. It is a special thing to see a truly professional musician playing a song from up close. I had interviewed Mike before, but I prefer this one because we immediately could talk about substantive things. We spoke about his American roots, To Be Free, a delicate subject, the American songwriting tradition, a road trip, the ...

Charles Bradley

July 21, 2020 12:00 - 33 minutes - 22.7 MB

This very intimate interview with Charles Bradley was one of the first that I edited when I started working for FaceCulture back in 2013. My colleague Martin Kuiper did the interview, and I was blown away by how raw and real this interview was as they chronicled through the immensely difficult and tragic life Charles had lived, from being homeless as a teenager to being wrongfully put in jail, to the present where he was living his dream of bringing people joy with his music. I had the good ...

Warpaint interview - Stella Mozgawa and Jenny Lee Lindberg (2018)

July 21, 2020 11:00 - 28 minutes - 19.4 MB

Sometimes the most fun interviews are the ones you didn't expect to happen. I was scheduled to interview Theresa Wayman from the American indie rock band Warpaint at the Best Kept Secret festival in the Netherlands. So I prepared accordingly, but at the last second she was no longer available so I got to talk with Stella and Jenny Lee instead. With my preparation mostly out the window I decided to just try to have as genuine a conversation with them as I could. Plus, I had spoken to Jenny Le...

Aldous Harding (2019)

July 16, 2020 10:00 - 25 minutes - 17.7 MB

Back in early 2019 we had a chance to sit down with New-Zealand artist Aldous Harding when she was in Amsterdam. From the moment we started the interview I noticed how deliberate she was in choosing her words. I truly appreciated that she took time to think about giving the most genuine answers to my, at times admittedly somewhat vague, questions. We spoke about the notion of having a purpose, falling into music, her album Designer, making the personal impersonal, and a lot more!  Support t...

DMA's - Tommy O'Dell (2020)

July 14, 2020 10:00 - 28 minutes - 19.8 MB

Right before the lockdown took effect here in the Netherlands I had the chance to sit down with Tommy O'Dell from indie rock band DMA's. I've been aware of the band for quite some time; I know a bunch of people who are really into them and I spoke with Matt a couple of years ago. So I was actually quite curious what the band would come up with for their third album THE GLOW because I heard it was going to be different. We spoke with Tommy about the album, finding his voice, what he has learn...

LP (2016)

June 30, 2020 10:00 - 21 minutes - 15.1 MB

The first time I heard 'Lost On You' it left such an immediate impression on me. I loved the bluesy instrumentation and Laura's vocals are simply incredible, the tone, the natural vibrato, the whistle, everything just worked. When the opportunity arrived to sat down and Talk with Laura Pergolizzi I was quite excited. The day of this interview was a chilly September day, made even colder by the wind, but even so we decided to do the interview outside because the only other option was a noisy ...

2Cellos interview - Stjepan Hauser and Luka Šulić (2017)

June 25, 2020 10:00 - 19 minutes - 13.1 MB

I first met Luka and Stjepan back in 2014 and this is the second time I had to pleasure to sit down with them. What I love about these guys is that they are incredible musicians but don't take themselves too seriously either. They like to joke around a lot, and with their dry Balkan sense of humor it's tricky but really fun for a somewhat serious interviewer, as I am. We spoke about their album Score, which remains my favorite work of theirs, on which they play various movie scores that mean...

Graham Nash (2016)

June 23, 2020 10:00 - 23 minutes - 15.9 MB

Back in 2016 we sat down with Graham Nash, who 's been making a name for himself for several decadec, first with The Hollies, and later with CSNY and his solo work. The occasion was the release of his solo album This Path Tonight, but the conversation quickly veered off into other topics as well, like songwriting, his divorce and finding new love, the rise of Donald Trump, his relationship with David Crosby and why CSNY broke up, among other things. There are several moments where Nash is pa...

Twenty One Pilots: Tyler Joseph (2013)

June 18, 2020 10:00 - 22 minutes - 15.2 MB

Out of all of the interviews I have done over the years this one probably sticks out to me most. It was just after my internship at FaceCulture, we were at Lowlands festival in the Netherlands, and it sounds silly now (remember it was 2013) but we decided out of practicle reasons we'd only interview a single person from each of the bands that day. This is why Josh isn't in the interview. The music of Twenty One Pilots struck me immediately: It was creative, unpredictable, catchy, but it also...

Paradise Lost - Gregor Mackintosh (2020)

June 04, 2020 11:00 - 21 minutes - 14.6 MB

I had such a good time talking with guitarist, singer and composer Gregor Mackintosh, primarily known for his work with Gothic Metal band Paradise Lost, but also Vallenfyre and Strigoi. I'll admit I will never be the biggest metal connoisseur but to delve into the album Obsidian and the impact that Paradise Lost has had on the genre is fascinating. We talked about the title Obsidian, goth clubs in the 80s, having creative outlets outside of Paradise Lost, a loss of focus in the 2000s, painti...

Behind the Music - Twan van Steenhoven (Big2/The Opposites)

May 31, 2020 10:00 - 1 hour - 41.5 MB

Support the show Thank you for listening! For more interviews ...

Clouseau interview - Koen en Kris Wauters (2019)

May 28, 2020 10:00 - 34 minutes - 23.9 MB

Bob Mould (2018)

May 26, 2020 10:00 - 30 minutes - 20.7 MB

Sometimes when I go into these interviews I do not fully comprehend the impact the musician in question has had on the development of not only their style of music, but also on their listeners as well. Bob Mould definitely falls in this category. Not only his work with Hüsker Dü in the 80s, but also with Sugar in the 90s and now his solo work, has inspired countless musicians and fans all over the world, and continues to do so. Bob was gracious enough to answer some questions about his past ...

Blind Melon - Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn (2019)

May 21, 2020 12:00 - 26 minutes - 18.2 MB

Blind Melon rose to stardom with their hit No Rain in 1993 and tragically the band theoretically ceased to exist after lead singer Shannon Hoon died in 1995. Few people knew Hoon was an avid camera-enthousiastic who filmed almost every aspect of his life right up until the day he died. This paved the way for the penetrating documentary All I Can Say about Hoon's life. So when Blind Melon guitarist Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn visited Amsterdam to promote All I Can Say I could't resis...

Keane - Tom Chaplin and Tim Rice-Oxley (2019)

May 19, 2020 09:00 - 31 minutes - 21.6 MB

Since my first interview with Tom en Tim in 2005 I have followed the band with interest. So when I had the opportunity to talk to them about their comeback album Cause & Effect in 2019 I was really curious how their relationship had evolved after the band's break up in 2013. And I couldn't resist to ask Tim about his thoughts about Tom's solo album The Wave ;-) By: Martin Kuiper Support the show Thank you for listening! Behind the Music - Eric van Eerdenburg van Lowlands

May 15, 2020 15:00 - 59 minutes - 41.1 MB

Heather Nova (2019)

May 14, 2020 10:00 - 19 minutes - 13.6 MB

Burmudian singer-songwriter Heather Nova has been releasing music for well over 25 years, and the passion and fervor with which she approaches her music to this day is inspiring to see. We spoke about her album Pearl (2019) and what songwriting means to her, but also on a more personal level about going through a divorce, her relationship with nature, and how topics like these find a way into her music.  Support the show Thank you for listening! The Lumineers - Wesley and Jeremiah (2019)

May 12, 2020 10:00 - 24 minutes - 16.8 MB

Before doing this interview I actually had met Wesley on one occassion, only briefly, when I was filming an interview with him in one of the first weeks as an intern at FaceCulture. The Lumineers were already riding high with their hit song "Ho Hey" and their debut album but what struck me about Wesley was how open he was in talking about his life and his music (something that at the time I thought very successful musicians were reluctant to do). The Lumineers have continued to write poignan...

Patrick Watson (2019)

May 12, 2020 10:00 - 28 minutes - 19.9 MB

I had interviewed Canadian musician, singer and songwriter Patrick Watson years earlier, in the same hotel, so I knew he would be a interesting and willing talker. When I arrived, however, I realized I had forgotten my research, and the hotel restaurant was so loud that there was no real way to do the interview inside. We had to be creative, so when Patrick spotted a very colorful egg to sit in I knew it was going to be alright. I remembered the gist of what I wanted to ask so we just starte...

The Drums - Jonathan Pierce (2019)

May 07, 2020 10:00 - 34 minutes - 23.6 MB

To be honest I didn't know that much about the drums before getting the opportunity to talk to founder, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Pierce just over a year ago. So I didn't really know what to expect, but from the get-go this conversation felt like talking to someone I had know for years. Jonathan spoke openly and candidly about being vulnerable, what makes him most happy, tapping into emotions and connecting with others through music. The conversation went so organically tha...

Dub FX (2020)

May 05, 2020 10:00 - 24 minutes - 16.9 MB

I remember being shown a performance of "Flow" on YouTube years ago and it absolutely mesmerized me. This was before loop stations were commonly used so the fact that he could create all these sounds and weave them into an awesome track just seemed so amazing to me. And most importantly, you could see the passion, the genuine creative talent, with which he did it. So fast forward to years later and I happen to get a chance to sit down with Benjamin Standford, better known by Dub FX, for a co...

Beth Hart (2019)

April 30, 2020 11:00 - 29 minutes - 20.6 MB

This was the third time I personally had the pleasure of sitting down with Beth Hart (FaceCulture has spoken with her many times). She's such an honest and candid person and because she's had quite the life already she always has an interesting perspective on things. Which makes my job even easier. For this interview the only aim was to focus on positive things, like her early love for the piano, accepting who she is, learning with every record, and of course her most recent album War In My ...

Damien Jurado (2020)

April 28, 2020 09:00 - 30 minutes - 20.9 MB

Although being a self-proclaimed introvert this interview with American singer-songwriter Damien Jurado was one of those conversations that felt very natural from the beginning. We spoke about his upcoming record What's New Tomboy, how he writes his songs, his friendship with producer Richard Swift who sadly recently passed away, and a memory of Bo Diddley's Oh Yeah, among other things.  Support the show Thank you for listening! Status Quo - Francis Rossi (2019)

April 23, 2020 11:00 - 43 minutes - 29.6 MB

It was such a pleasure sitting down Status Quo's own Francis Rossi for a conversation. The interview took place in the American hotel in Amsterdam, where Rossi said he had lived for several months in years past. He seemed to be in a great mood and is quite the conversationalist which made the interview flow very naturally. We talked about his experiences in the music business, his relationship with friend and colleague Rick Parfitt and Status Quo's latest album Backbone and a lot more.  Sup...

James Arthur (2019)

April 16, 2020 10:00 - 20 minutes - 14 MB

I had heard and read a lot about James before sitting down with him, both good and bad. Of course I'd seen him on X-Factor UK but I didn't really know what to expect. He was in Amsterdam for a showcase and was kind enough to sit down with us to talk about his music, reinventing himself, letting go of the pressure he dealt with earlier in his career, music snobbery and more! What I remember most from our talk was how honest he was, which isn't always the case when talking to major label artis...

Sabaton - Joakim Brodén (2020)

April 14, 2020 12:00 - 15 minutes - 10.5 MB

Although FaceCulture had spoken to him before, this was personally my first time sitting down with Sabaton's Joakim "Jocke" Brodén. The funny thing is that I initially was supposed to talk with drummer Hannes and it was only minutes before that I realized that Joakim was going to do the interview. Sometimes in this line of work the most fun and sincere conversations are the ones that you didn't prepare for, and it always helps to talk to someone who is as easy-going as Joakim. We spoke about...

YUNGBLUD (2018)

April 10, 2020 12:00 - 21 minutes - 14.9 MB

In early 2018 Dominic Richard Harrison, aka YUNGBLUD, was in Amsterdam and our Brazillian colleague Joao Perassolo caught up with him and spoke about his musical upbringing, not being afraid to speak out, Polygraph Eyes, rock 'n roll getting a bit boring, and a lot more! His usual infectious energy makes for both a interesting and fun, but above all honest, conversation. Support the show Thank you for listening! Billie Eilish (2018)

April 10, 2020 12:00 - 20 minutes - 13.8 MB

Back in early 2018 we had the chance to talk to Billie Eilish, a rising star at that point. The buzz around her was already quite strong and you could feel that she was going to do great things in music and beyond. We spoke about songwriting, unexpected fame, what makes a good song, her ambitions outside of music, and a lot more. Check it out! Support the show Thank you for listening! Roxette - Per Gessle (2018)

April 10, 2020 12:00 - 28 minutes - 19.8 MB

It was such a treat to sit down with one half of Swedish powerhouse Roxette: Per Gessle. Having been responsible for some of the most iconic songs of the late 80s/early 90s on their hit albums Look Sharp! and Joyride, Per had more than his share of insight into the music industry and how they fared in it. We spoke about his early influences, sudden international success, the arrival of grunge music and how it affected his musical identity, Marie not being able to tour anymore, what he is wor...

Nothing But Thieves - Conor Mason (2018)

April 10, 2020 12:00 - 12 minutes - 8.81 MB

Over the years we have been lucky enough to have spoken to the guys from Nothing But Thieves, and vocalist Conor Mason in particular, on a number occasions. This particular interview is a short one, about 12 minutes, in which we catch up with Mason and reflect with him on the band's second album Broken Machine (2017) and how he is in a much better place after having gone through struggles with exhaustion and depression in years past.  Support the show Thank you for listening! Rich Robinson - The Black Crowes/The Magpie Salute (2018)

April 10, 2020 12:00 - 29 minutes - 20.3 MB

Hearing the stories guitarist and songwriter Rich Robinson has to tell from his 35+ year experience in music are simply amazing for any music lover, and I must admit this interview inspired me a great deal. Robinson talks about his early influences like R.E.M. and the Beatles, She Talks To Angels, surreal moments in his career, his critique of the music industry, his friendship with fellow guitarist Marc Ford, the fractured relationship with his brother (and former The Black Crowes vocalist)...

Jack Savoretti (2019)

April 10, 2020 11:00 - 27 minutes - 19.1 MB

Over the years we have been lucky enough to sit down with English singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti on a number of occassions. This interview, conducted in March of this year, is the latest in which we talk about the road to his chart-topping album Singing To Strangers, a cinematic quality, Bob Dylan, his love for entertaining people, and a lot more!  Support the show Thank you for listening! We spoke with Billy about his guitar playing, early influences, how he works with Maynard James Keenan, controlling your ego, reactions from fans, future plans, and a lot more!  Support the show Thank you for listening! James Morrison (2019)

April 10, 2020 10:00 - 27 minutes - 19.1 MB

This wasn't my first time sitting down with English singer-songwriter James Morrison. I was lucky enough to have a conversation with him on a few other occasions and the thing that struck me every single time, aside from his kindness, was his honesty and willingness to talk about the difficult things in his life. On this occasion we talked about his latest album You're Stronger Than You Know, self-acceptance, feeling empowered through his wife, having a newfound sense of freedom, and a lot m...

Death Cab For Cutie (2018)

April 10, 2020 10:00 - 25 minutes - 17.4 MB

I remember listening to Death Cab For Cutie quite a bit in my first years of college, well before the idea of working in music was planted in my mind. So having the chance to sit down with Ben and Nick was such a treat. We talked about their album Thank You For Today, it being a pivotal album for the band because of a lot of changes they were experiencing, learning from every album they've made, and a lot more! We even talked about Seattle desperately deserving an NBA team (I had Seattle Sup...

Carrie Underwood (2018)

April 10, 2020 08:00 - 21 minutes - 14.6 MB

We spoke with American country music superstar Carrie Underwood in August of 2018 right before her very first live performance in the Netherlands. We talked about her sixth album Cry Pretty that was released a few weeks later, writing songs about real life, her voice, getting into producing, and a lot more! Nathaniel Rateliff (2020)

February 27, 2020 13:00 - 18 minutes - 12.8 MB

Nathaniel Rateliff is another one of those artists that had been on my radar for a while. Over the years I had listened to his work with the Night Sweats and saw him perform live at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. It was such a treat to get the chance to pick his brain a little bit, this time with a focus on his solo album And It's Still Alright, vulnerability and what it means to have a solo album out again.  Support the show Thank you for listening!
