The Hardcore Archive Podcast

165 episodes - English - Latest episode: 3 days ago -

When I first got into hardcore I witnessed some pretty wild events. There were fights with skinheads, suburban dudes acting as "crews," countless stage dives, a full scale riot, black eyes, a broken nose, and a broken window at a gig in a second story loft courtesy of a guitar amp. There was also the time we all had to wait it out because someone pulled a gun out in the parking lot. This all transpired within my first two years in the scene. Needless to say I was hooked. This podcast will serve as not only a memory of all of those events, but also a look into the future. Episode 64- Joe Tunis (Carbon Records, Hilkka, Pengo, Tuurd, Tumul)

February 28, 2022 16:35 - 1 hour - 79.2 MB

Joe Tunis has been an active participant in the Rochester music scene for the last three decades. As most listeners of this podcast are probably aware by now, I got into our local music scene in the mid-90s. By that time, Joe was playing in the band Hilkka and had already formed Carbon Records. Much of our conversation focuses on the 1990s and early 2000s. In the late 1990s, Joe also formed Pengo, a No Wave band with Jason Finkbeiner and John Schoen. Jason and John had both released music pre...

Episode 63- The Red Death (Paul, Josh, Aaron)

February 25, 2022 19:11 - 2 hours - 121 MB

Episode 63 features another trek down to Bath, NY. This time I'm joined by three members of the band The Red Death. I had Paul and Josh on for the whole interview and Aaron joined me for the second half. There's a couple other people who played in The Red Death that I will likely have on future episodes. The Red Death were an extreme metal band that existed from 2002-2008. They were one of the first bands that I can remember that included hardcore kids playing that style of music. Shortly aft...

Episode 62- Kendal Hall (Heavy Is The Head)

February 22, 2022 04:06 - 33 minutes - 30.8 MB

For Episode 62 I had a brief chat with Kendal Hall from the band Heavy Is The Head. A fairly new band out of Richmond, Heavy Is The Head will soon be releasing their debut 7" on GGT Records. I got the information from Kendal on how the band formed, how they hooked up with the label, and what's in store for the band in the near future. We also talk about how hard it is to put bands into genres these days. One of the things that drew me to this band was the lyrics so I'm glad we got a chance to...

Episode 61- Rich Thurston (Culture, Blood Has Been Shed, Terror, Treason)

February 18, 2022 18:59 - 1 hour - 74.1 MB

On episode 61 my guest is Rich Thurston. Most people who listen to this podcast have likely seen Rich play in a number of bands over the last 30 years or so. Rich has been in more bands than most of my previous guests. We didn't talk about all of the bands in the interview, but I tried to discuss some of the more notable bands he has been in. Some of these bands include Culture, Blood Has Been Shed, Terror, and One Nation Under. We also talk about the current bands Rich is in, which include T...

Episode 60- Thom Bulman (Verona, They Sleep They Dream, Sakes Alive, Youngbloods, Bull Airs)

February 15, 2022 16:55 - 1 hour - 71.8 MB

Episode 60 has been in the works for some time. For more than a decade in the early 2000s, Thom Bulman was a staple of our local music scene. Having played in tons of bands including One Year Nothing, Verona, They Sleep They Dream, Sakes Alive, and Youngbloods, I knew Thom was someone I'd want to have on here eventually. I quickly realized through connecting with him on social media that Thom has gone on to create a very unique and cool business for himself. Not only that, but while preparing...

Episode 59- Hourglass (Gerald, Aaron, and Michael)

February 11, 2022 04:29 - 1 hour - 61.7 MB

On episode 59 I got the chance to talk with Gerald, Michael, and Aaron from the recently reformed band Hourglass. Hourglass was originally a Buffalo based band in the mid 90s. They got a couple new members to round out the new lineup and now the band members are in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Vermont. This year, Immigrant Sun Records will be releasing the Hourglass Discography LP and Hellminded Records will be releasing a new LP! Talk about making up for lost time. Anyway, we briefly discussed t...

Episode 58- Spindel (SFW Zine, The Crimson Guard, SATMAP)

February 10, 2022 04:02 - 1 hour - 88.9 MB

In yet another edition of me catching up with old friends, I got the chance to catch up with Rich aka Spindel for Episode 58. I often talk about how great and diverse the scene was in Rochester in the late 90s. Spindel was a large part of our scene, through doing a zine/label, booking shows and later as a part of the band The Crimson Guard. We talk about all of this and so much more during our trip down memory lane. One of the shows Spindel booked (in my old basement) was for Against Me! in 1...

Episode 57: Kim and Mario Cangemi (Upstate Records)

February 04, 2022 04:02 - 55 minutes - 51.1 MB

Episode 57 features my conversation with Mario and Kim Cangemi from Upstate Records. When I first started getting ready to do this podcast in March of 2020, I noticed that Upstate was a pretty good up and coming label out of Albany. Formed in 2017, the label has new or upcoming releases from bands like Brick By Brick, Bushido Code, Gloves Off, Smash Your Enemies, and tons of other bands. We talk about the influences behind starting the label, running a record label during a pandemic, as well ...

Episode 56: Patrick Loiacono (Moment of Truth, Fallguy)

January 31, 2022 16:12 - 1 hour - 79.9 MB

On episode 56 I am joined by Patrick Loiacono. He has played in a few bands with Jim Callahan so there's some overlap with bands and stories from Jim's episodes. It's always good to hear another perspective though. Listeners of this podcast will most likely be familiar with the bands Moment of Truth and Fallguy that Pat has played in. We also discuss some other projects he did in the 80s and 90s. The main reason I had Pat on now though is to help promote the upcoming Madball show. On February...

Episode 55- Grant Johnson (Spark Lights The Friction, The Funeral, Difficult, Bent Limbs)

January 27, 2022 17:38 - 2 hours - 125 MB

For Episode 55 I'm joined by Grant Johnson. I've talked on previous episodes about how strong the connection between Rochester and Syracuse has been over the years. Grant has played in a lot of bands in Syracuse over the last 25 years and we discuss those bands as well as their connection to the Rochester scene. We also talk about a lot of fast hardcore bands from the Slap A Ham/625 Records era. Some of the bands Grant has played in include Set In Motion, Eternal Youth, Spark Lights The Frict...

Episode 54- Michael Honch (Nuns on Death Row, Hunger Artist, Powerline)

January 24, 2022 05:57 - 1 hour - 94.1 MB

For Episode 54, Greg Benoit (Rochester Hardcore History) and I had the privilege of interviewing Michael Honch about his time in the very early days of Rochester Hardcore. Michael played in local bands Nuns on Death Row, Mr. Clean, Hunger Artist, and Powerline. After that, he moved to DC for Graduate School. The conversation primarily centers around Nuns on Death Row and Hunger Artist. It's a very interesting discussion and I would think anyone who cares about knowing the roots of our local s...

Episode 53- Chris Vandeviver (Against The Odds, American Murder Story, Verona, Sakes Alive

January 19, 2022 12:54 - 1 hour - 96.1 MB

Episode 53 features my conversation with Chris Vandeviver. We talk about all of the bands Chris has played in over the years. A few of these bands are: Against The Odds, American Murder Story, Verona, and Sakes Alive. We also discuss Chris's recent activities with recording and logic pro. Chris has a website that I'm attaching with the show notes. You will find more information on Chris's recordings and logic pro mentorships there. As always, the conversation shifts into early 2000s hardcore ...

Episode 52- New Music

January 14, 2022 16:52 - 36 minutes - 33.2 MB

For Episode 52 I'm trying something new that I hope to make a monthly feature. Each New Music episode will feature 10 or more songs that were released recently by bands that I find fit the theme of this podcast. Since this is the first of these episodes I decided to include a couple songs that were released in the fall. This is a pretty diverse mix for the first episode so hopefully everyone can find something to enjoy. Most of these bands have new releases available so I'm including all of t...

Episode 51- Justin Kern (The Pissants, Robot Has Werewolf Hand, They Live, Crappy Dracula, Fudgy

January 07, 2022 05:51 - 1 hour - 76.9 MB

On episode 51 I am joined by one of the funniest people I have met through punk and hardcore. I first met Justin Kern in the late 90s through Pat Dent, another one of the funnier people I have met through this subculture. He grew up in Dunkirk, NY and he ended up going to school in Buffalo with Pat. The idea of living in a small town is discussed quite a bit during our conversation. While in Buffalo, Justin played in a plethora of musical projects. Two of the more notable bands Justin was in ...

Episode 50- In The Pit: Top 50 Breakdowns with Jim Byrne

December 24, 2021 18:22 - 2 hours - 145 MB

After I initially interviewed Jim Byrne on episode 18 we talked about doing an episode dedicated to our favorite breakdowns. I think in the beginning we were thinking about maybe talking about 10 or 20 breakdowns. As I got closer to episode 50, I suggested we make it 50 breakdowns. We have spent the better part or the last three months going back and forth on tracks, ranking and reranking them. Judging by the fact that there was still songs by bands that we had trouble fitting on, I'm sure we...

Episode 49: Michael Bendlin

December 17, 2021 20:39 - 2 hours - 140 MB

Catching up with old friends has been a constant theme with this podcast since the first episode. I first became friends with Michael Bendlin in the summer of 1999. Later that year, he and I were a part of a crew of people that traveled down to Boston for the last Ten Yard Fight show. Mike grew up in Bath, about an hour south of Rochester in the Southern Tier. We spend a good amount of time discussing and reminiscing on the late 90s and early 2000s hardcore and punk scenes. After that, Michae...

Episode 48- Dylan Wainwright (Deal With God, Stand Alone, The Thrill)

December 10, 2021 12:51 - 2 hours - 116 MB

"Hardcore is not a spectator sport-" Dylan Wainwright.  Over the course of 48 episodes in a year and a half, I have interviewed maybe 5 people I didn't know very well before. These interviews are some of my favorite ones to conduct, despite me rarely leaving my comfort zone otherwise. Dylan Wainwright is someone I knew of but hadn't actually met or talked to prior to interviewing him. As with the other 4 or so conversations with people I didn't know, the interview turned out great. As I menti...

Episode 47- Chris Ring (After Dark Entertainment)

December 07, 2021 04:40 - 39 minutes - 36.6 MB

On this episode Chris Ring returns for a brief conversation. We talk about a few cool upcoming shows Chris has booked before the year ends, including TID the season. While our conversation is short, Chris still managed to sneak some funny stories in at the end. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support

Episode 46: Greg Polard and Donny Mutt (One Up)

November 24, 2021 14:50 - 2 hours - 133 MB

As we get closer to 2022, we are nearing twenty years since the formation of the band One Up. On this episode I got a chance to chat with their vocalist Greg Polard and guitarist Donny Mutt. We go pretty deep on the history of One Up. The band was primarily active from 2002-2005 so there's a lot of memories from that era discussed on this episode. We talk about all of their records, including their discography that was recently released on Hellminded Records. We also discuss the tours and Pos...

Episode 45- Ian Courtney (Through Thick and Thin, Hawk I, Coalition, Detroit Diamonds, Stage Dive)

November 17, 2021 04:50 - 2 hours - 135 MB

On this episode I had the opportunity to chat with my old friend Ian Courtney. Even though he is from Detroit, I used to run into Ian frequently in the early 2000s. We first met in Toronto and I would see him in many other places after that, all because of hardcore of course. We talk about a lot of these experiences, as well as the bands Ian played in. The main bands are Through Thick and Thin, Hawk I, Detroit Diamonds, and Stage Dive. We also talk about many of the bands Ian has filled in fo...

Episode 44- Vincent Garguilo (Dead to the World, Taken By The Burning, Shai Hulud)

October 28, 2021 04:07 - 2 hours - 129 MB

I talk a lot on the podcast about the connection between Buffalo and Rochester, especially in the late 90s and early 00s. My guest on episode 44 is someone who lived in both cities during his college years. This episode also presented another opportunity for me to reconnect with yet another old friend. I'm starting to sense a theme here. Anyway, Vincent Garguilo has a strong connection to both Buffalo and Rochester. He has been in a few bands from this area (Dead to the World, Sincerely Yours...

Episode 43- Dan Butson (Something Sacred, Canvas, Initial Doubt)

October 14, 2021 05:19 - 1 hour - 80.5 MB

For Episode 43 I had yet another opportunity to reconnect with an old friend that I hadn't spoken to in a long time. Dan Butson played guitar for a handful of Rochester area bands from 1995-2002 before moving to New Orleans. We talk about the bands Dan played guitar in (Initial Doubt, Something Sacred, and a few other locals).  He also talks about his experiences living in New Orleans for most of the last two decades. Some of these include selling records to Trent Reznor and performing at Mar...

Episode 42- Jimmy Stadt (Polar Bear Club, Shy Tooth, Tamiroff, The Avram)

September 17, 2021 12:46 - 2 hours - 160 MB

One of the main reasons I started this podcast was to document how great the Rochester Harcore scene was in the early 2000s. Many great bands have come since then, but a lot of the foundation was built for those bands 20-25 years ago. In addition to all of the diverse bands that were being created in Rochester, there were also quite a few out of town bands that built a following here and helped influence our city's sound. During this time, Jimmy Stadt became heavily involved with our scene. W...

Episode 41- Adam Whistler and Eric Foster (Crimson Guard, Robot Has Werewolf Hand, Beardage)

September 11, 2021 14:29 - 2 hours - 144 MB

Eric Foster and Adam Whistler have been friends playing music together for over two decades now. Even though they have also played in several bands separately, I thought it would be fun to profile them together here. Some of the bands they have played in include Arch Rivals, The Crimson Guard, Robot Has Werewolf Hand, Beardage, and Total Fucking Bummer. We talk about these bands and many more as well as the other usual pertinent topics. This was one of the lengthier and funnier episodes I hav...

Episode 40- Chris Nguyen (Borrowed Time)

September 04, 2021 03:52 - 1 hour - 59.2 MB

I've known Chris Nguyen for 15 years or so. I'd say probably 75% of the times I have run into him has been at a show Borrowed Time was playing. When I first heard he was their new vocalist, I thought that there is really no better person to join that band. As you will learn from the interview, Chris had been a vocalist in a handful of local bands in the early to mid 2000s. He was always a big supporter of Borrowed Time so it really made sense that he would join their band eventually. Chris's ...

Episode 39: Will Carroll (National Teen Set Outsider)

September 02, 2021 21:56 - 1 hour - 61.9 MB

One thing I have always loved about punk and hardcore is all of the combinations of different characters you will find. Will Carroll is definitely one of the more unique individuals I have come across in this scene. To say that Will is involved in a lot of projects currently would be an understatement. Everything all started with his National Teenset Outsider Zine and 45 Kid Comic. From there, he has branched that out to a Radio show on Sunday nights on WAYOFM radio. In addition to that, he j...

Episode 38- Aidan Monahan and Jim Byrne (Borrowed Time and Something Sacred)

September 02, 2021 01:16 - 1 hour - 83.3 MB

When I first started this podcast, I made a pretty big list of people I wanted to interview eventually. Aidan Monahan was one of the first names I wrote down. Originally born in Ireland and having lived on both the east and west coast, Aidan has definitely lived a nomadic lifestyle. We touch on all of the different places he has lived as well as the bands he has been in. Because Aidan mentioned having a bad memory and they were in both bands together, we figured it would be great to have our ...

Episode 37 (Building on Fire Part 1)

August 28, 2021 00:02 - 1 hour - 84.3 MB

If you have listened to at least a few episodes of this podcast, you have probably heard more than a few references to a Standfast/Building on Fire tour I helped book and tried go on as a roadie in the Summer of 2001. Due to a lot of bad luck, Building on Fire ended up completing that tour separately. While the tour clearly isn't looked at as a success by any means there are still plenty of interesting (and often times funny) moments to discuss. We also took a look at the first album that Bui...

Episode 36: Benny Beyond (Like Wolves, I Object, Destrux, Green Dreams)

August 26, 2021 17:27 - 1 hour - 101 MB

Anyone who has listened to a few episodes of this podcast is probably already aware that I love hardcore, punk, and hip hop. I'll jump at any chance I get to discuss all of these topics in one conversation. Benny Beyond got his start in the Rochester music scene performing in bands like Destrux and I object. Fast forward a few years and Benny was then singing for Like Wolves, one of the more beloved Rochester bands of the last 20 years. About ten years ago when Like Wolves was starting to slo...

Episode 35: Matt VSE (Only Shallow, New Ethic Pizzeria)

August 20, 2021 16:31 - 1 hour - 107 MB

Back on episode 7 I did a feature on local small business owners. I didn't talk politics or social issues with the guests on that episode. Immediately after it aired, Black Lives Matter started receiving a lot of attention intentionally again. For a few weeks late last Summer, if felt like Rochester was one of the hubs for activism. Matt and I were both present for many of these protests so I felt it was important to have him back on to get his take on a lot of these pertinent issues. In addi...

Episode 34- Derek Dole (Dead Hearts, Old Ghosts)

August 05, 2021 12:30 - 1 hour - 81.8 MB

On this episode we also discuss his bands (Can I Say, Dead Hearts, Old Ghosts), the record label he co-owns (Press Gang Records), as well as The Nickel City Scene Podcast that he is a part of. You can find more info about Press Gang and Old Ghosts at the websites below. Nickel Cify Scene Podcast is ...

July 04, 2021 17:28 - 2 hours - 150 MB

On episode 33 we are joined by my old friend Eric aka EMS. I have known him for most of the years I have been active in hardcore. When I first met him, he was the bassist of Brother's Keeper. He also ran Surprise Attack Records and Distro (SA Mob) at that time. Since then, he has played bass in Stretch Armstrong, Empty Promises, and Smoke and Mirrors. Currently, Eric is the vocalist of Human Animal. Last year they released the LP False Realities. You can find this as well as other general ban...

Episode 32- Jared Johnson (Sore Ear Collective, Troubleshooter)

June 26, 2021 15:03 - 1 hour - 96.5 MB

One of my favorite aspects of hardcore and punk is all of the different elements of DIY you can become immersed in. My guest on this episode has been in bands, books shows, toured with bands, and he also currently runs a pretty cool record label. I'm talking about Jared Johnson from Sore Ear Collective. Throughout our conversation we discussed his many adventures in our subculture as well as what's to come for his record label as well as his bands. --- Support this podcast: https://podcast...

We discuss three classic Rochester Hardcore shows from that year that I was lucky enough to be a part of. We also talk about three local releases that came out that year as well as some national ones. As with most other episodes, we also touch on current events. Greg also talks about the struggle of being a parent during trying times. While there is no music on th...

Episode 29- Joel Staniszewski (The End of Everything, Drago, Holy Angels, Daybreak)

March 13, 2021 04:15 - 1 hour - 104 MB

One of the fun things about doing this podcast is getting to know people a little bit better. On this episode, I got a chance to get to know Joel Staniszewski. During our conversation, I realized I booked one of his bands almost 20 years ago and saw another several times. Joel is currently the vocalist of Las Vegas based hardcore band The End of Everything. Most people from Western New York are probably familiar with Joel's work as a drummer. This includes bands like Drago, Holy Angels, and D...

November 06, 2020 14:48 - 2 hours - 159 MB

Finally a new episode of Enterprise Hardcore Podcast! This features a lengthy conversation with my good friend Ben Keefe. This episode was special to me because Ben and I got into hardcore and punk in 8th grade together in 1994. So this was a very fun trip down memory lane for me. Before that, him and I played in a few bands locally that aren't really worth mentioning outside of this podcas...
