Reverence at the Table

Galatians 6:7-10

Synopsis: Some may be wandering why we have the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of July every year.  This is the weekend when our nation celebrates the remembrance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.  The believer’s declaration of independence was established in Jesus Christ.  As a nation we celebrate the national July 4th holiday with parades and fireworks.  As believers one of the ways we celebrate our Savior is through the receiving of the bread and cup in The Remembrance of His sacrifice of Himself for our freedom from sin and death.

      I begin today by reading from Galatians 6.  In this passage Paul lays out the principle of sowing and reaping (7-10).  It is important for us to note that Paul points it out in his letter that deals with the freedom of believers in Christ Jesus.  The freedom of the believer does not set aside the principle but enables the believer to look at it as it extends into eternity. 

      Now we come to the table as equals; we are all sinners standing in the need of grace (14).  That is the context of Paul’s blessing and our benediction (16).  “As for those who will follow this rule-peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.”  So let it be.
