Richard and I had a fun conversations about how he determines what he considers free, and what tools teachers are looking for most today. He shares his thoughts on innovation in the free tool space, and talks about what’s coming next for his blog!

With the sudden shift to remote learning, teachers are searching for tools to support student learning and remote instruction. Richard Byrne (@rmbyrne) of Free Technology For Teachers is one of the nations foremost experts in the use and availability of free tools that support teaching and learning. We’ll talk with Richard about what should be in the quarantined teacher’s toolbox!

Richard is a former high school social studies teacher who taught for eight and a half years at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris, ME. During that time he piloted 1:1 laptop use before the program went school-wide. Richard has spoken at events all over North America, Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. His work is focused on sharing free web-based resources that educators can use to enhance their students’ learning experiences.

He is a five time winner of the Edublogs Award for Best Resource Sharing Blog. He became a Google Certified Teacher in 2009. In 2012 he received a Merlot Classics award from chancellor’s office of California State University. Tech & Learning Magazine named Richard one of their “people to watch” in their 100@30 30th Anniversary celebration.

On a daily basis his blog Free Technology for Teachers reaches a subscriber base of more than 60,000 educators. In addition to writing Free Technology for Teachers, he also maintain iPadApps4School.comAndroid4Schools.com, and PracticalEdTech.com.
