Special Education expert Crystal Brooks shares her perspective on one of the greatest challenges schools are facing in 2020--reopening schools in an online format while
accommodating students with exceptional learning needs. The discussion touches on social emotional needs of students, trauma in the lives of teachers and students, and implementing accommodations in an online format. In this challenging time, students have learned metacognitive approaches to learning and realized traditional schools do not allow for all the ways they learn best. In terms of assistive technology, students and teachers are learning about new tools that will help them in both online and traditional learning environments. Resources to help teachers with accommodations, teaching in online environments, and social emotional health are presented.
