The RotoHeat rookie profile and NFL outlook for upcoming rookie quarterback Matt Corral who is set to be drafted in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Is Matt Corral still a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after a bowl-game ankle sprain?

Bio

It all began at Oaks Christian High School in California for Matt Corral and his football career. However, before completing high school he decided to transfer to Long Beach Polytechnic High School, also in California.

At the high school level, Matt Corral had a total of over 11,000 yards and 123 touchdowns, before ultimately graduating and originally committing to first University of Southern Carolina (USC), then the University of Florida before eventually ending up committing to the University of Mississippi.

College

In his first season at Ole Miss, Matt Corral was a backup and got to play in four games, essentially redshirting the year, before becoming the starter in 2019. In his four years at the University of Mississippi Matt Corral completed 612 of 910 passes (67.3%) for 8,281 passing yards and 57 passing touchdowns to 23 interceptions. Corral also rushed the ball 334 times for 1,338 yards and 18 rushing scores.

In his final game for Ole Miss, the 2022 Sugar Bowl against Baylor University, Matt Corral suffered an ankle sprain early in the game and had to be carted off. He later received news that there was no long-term damage to his ankle.

Is Matt Corral still a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after a bowl-game ankle sprain?

NFL Outlook

At the NFL level, Matt Corral is very likely going to become a starter either in 2022 or in 2023 as the ankle sprain he suffered in the 2022 Sugar Bowl should not be an issue by the time the NFL season rolls around.

As a quarterback prospect, Matt Corral is an athletic quarterback with the ability to run the ball on designed QB runs or scramble when the pocket breaks down.

As a passer, Corral is a good thrower of the football. Corral has a very good delivery on his throws, which is evident by the way the football jumps out of his hands. Matt Corral is also a mechanically sound QB, with a quick throwing motion, which is going to be enticing for NFL teams and could mean that a first-round selection is in the cards for Corral at the 2022 NFL Draft.

Matt Corral is an accurate passer, who can make throws at all levels of the field. With good pocket presence, Corral is often able to climb the pocket when he senses pressure. When he steps up in the pocket, it is important that he gets to set his feet, as his accuracy drops remarkably whenever he doesn’t have his feet set.

When it comes to projecting Matt Corral’s draft stock, several factors play in. Corral played in an RPO-heavy offensive scheme, which could mean that he is not used to reading coverages and as such might not be very pro-ready.

The RPO-heavy scheme also means that Matt Corral rarely had to throw with anticipation as he could read one defender and visibly see his receivers get open. He needs to learn to throw with anticipation if he is going to succeed at the NFL level.

On top of that, you can add the ankle sprain he suffered in the last game of his college career.

Adding these things together makes us believe that Matt Corral is very unlikely to be a top10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, this year’s crop of quarterbacks is not as strong as we have seen the last few years. As a result, Matt Corral could very well be picked in the back half of the first round or the top half of the second, in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Thank you for reading this breakdown of Matt Corral. Where do you have him ranked among rookie quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL draft?
