The catastrophic wildfires rapidly spreading across California highlight, with jarring clarity, the deep income divide between the rich and the poor. In recent years, tens of thousands, of people have lost their homes, from trailer parks, to apartment complexes, to luxury homes and mansions. But it is not the fires themselves that expose California’s wealth gap, rather it is the aftermath of the fires themselves that determine who gets to effectively reset their lives back to normal, and who gets to live with housing insecurity for years afterwards.

Wealthy victims of the fires have iron-clad insurance policies they use to rebuild homes sometimes worth more than the homes destroyed in the fires, but the poor don‘t fare so well; they lose everything in their homes, and years later, still have nothing.
