Hello! I lovingly call this fourth stage of change, “embracing the suck.” The truth is, change is hard. To be challenged—to stretch and grow and evolve—is something so many of us long for. But, when we hit resistance, we want to back up and shut down. Our brain kicks in and suddenly we don’t feel safe. It’s uncomfortable. It’s hard.

We know that change stems from desire and the greater the desire:

The higher the stakes

The more we have to lose

The more vulnerable we feel if it doesn’t work out

Embracing the suck doesn’t mean that every step along the way will be a painful one. It means that even when it’s hard, even when you doubt yourself, you can move forward anyway. Waiting to feel comfortable before you start may mean you’re waiting a very long time. Don’t wait. You’re worth it. And what you desire most may be just on the other side of this last step.

Thank you for listening to my four-part series on change. If you’re trying to put these ideas into practice, but you’re feeling so much discomfort that you want to stop, consider journaling. A plain pad of paper and pen will do, or you can use the Treasured Journal, which includes questions, prompts, and sentence stems to help you open up and express your thoughts. You can get the journal and its companion meditation guide at this link:
